Re: Your thoughts please ......

i never will understand discard

i cant see why undersised fish cant be screened out and then rest used, that fish had a value even if not the fish they were after??

alot of the reason to me is that we are too fussy on what we eat, if you see a french fish market they must sell at least 60% more variety of fish to our markets, and they will be used

I'm not saying rape the sea for anything that moves, there really is no easy answer, boat quotas dont seem to work, pair trawlers are savage and indescriminate

god knows what will work

Re: Your thoughts please ......

well boat quotas is the cause of dumping.....the boat can fish as much as it likes but can only catch 5 tonne of cod (no idea what the exact quota is) ....so then for the next 2 weeks it targets whiting....killing cod at the same time which it has to dump overboard....the quota idea is madness if it is intended to save stocks it doesnt save anything ... all it does is stops them being landed at the fish market and so it looks like we are doing something....

A bit radical, feel free to point out the error of my ways....

Ban nets worldwide.
Only allow line & hook caught fish (including long lines) individually tagged.
Trawlers would have to adapt, probably couldn't cos I've not given the idea great thought.
Fish would become a rariety & very very expensive.
Fish stocks might recover in 30-40 years.
meanwhile our beaches would become packed with people trying to catch "free" fish for sale on the black market.
£10 for a mackeral guv

Re: Your thoughts please ......

There are now are more sustainable ways to put fish on the table. Why oh why do we not grow freshwater fish (the xenophobes will only gladly point out that them eastern europeans even eat CARP by God, forgetting they were originally stocked in stew ponds as a source of FOOD. We must stop this madness before we cannot recover. Net technology can now allow the targetting of specific sizes and species. There may be SOME bio kill and we cannot expect there never to be problems but this situation cannot continue. If stocks of fish continue do plummet I think we soon see boat charters a thing of the past as the cost of setting to sea for sport becomes far too prohibitive for very little worthwile return.

No strong feelings there then :)
