Question Hamble River?

Hi everyone.
I'm planning on starting fishing again after many years away.
The spots I'm intending on fishing are the Hamble River, just north of the M27 bridge or perhaps further down south towards Hamble-le-rice.
I have a few questions..

Do I need a licence for these salt water spots? (I read there was a £3 per day ticket needed for the Beaulieu river@bucklers hard)

What should I expect to catch? (or should I say what should I expect to have swimming about?) I'm thinking perhaps Bass & flounder anything else?

Fishing from the shore, what sort\size rod should I aim for?
Reel? ...Multiplier\fixed spool?
Line? braking strain?
Rigs?

It's been a very long time since I did this, I currently have no kit, so will literally be starting from scratch - so want to get it right

Your help and advise will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Danro

Re: Hamble River?

Hiya mate , basically all around the hamble expect to catch flounder , bass , mullet , and at the moment dogs and smoothhounds as well by the gun turrets , and off hamble spit , but beware if you fish the spit (low water) , keep your eyes peeled on the tide cutting you off , as it comes across the back of you at break neck speed ! , theres some decent bass coming out by the bp jetty at the moment , baits would be rag , squid and mackeral fillets , and peeler crab for the smutts , a 2 hook flapper rig will be ideal for most species , if you want to target smutts and bass , then use a pulley pennel rig , with big hooks size 4/0 - 6/0 , and you do not need a license to fish here , best of luck ,

lee.

Re: Hamble River?

Thanks for the quick reply - much appreciated.
I'm off now to find out what some of these "new" terms are.. "pennel rig" and "flapper rig" - I think I've seen a sticky for these on here....

..then it's a search for a good shop to see what goodies they have to offer.

Re: Hamble River?

Pennel ....

useful for 'long baits' like a side of mackerel/whole Calamari squid/string of lug etc.

Flapper ... no bait clips for close fishing

Thanks Gremlin - much appreciated.

I've used the flapper one before , but I'm sure it was called something else at the time
