| Welcom You Duke. I use 20lbs Class ugly stiks and they are a superb rods, 50lb class we use for Conger Eels over wrecks and heave em up from very deep water work, it may be too beefy for what you are looking at doing. I also use an Abu Conolon uptider, that can handle up to 10ozs of weight and it has a handle than twists locks and shortens for when you are reeling in using a groin pad, was going to say butt, i think that means something else your side of the pond. I have landed Smoothound to 14.5lbs (shark family high speed racers) and other decent fish, so it will do a good job as well. It is a very good method of fishing, as JP says you can cast 30-50 yards away from the boat (scare area) and release some line out in the tide, then when you get a fish on it registers as either the rod nodding / bending or a slack line spring back. Instant bit detection. Hope this helps. Cheers |

| Re: Help Choosing Rod. Thanks. 40lb fish are as big as we would probably go. No casting just drop right over the side. will be using a 5 oz weight, with 25 to 30lb line. Maybe a 30 to 50 lb class rod would do. Any ideas on which ugly stick would be good. custom, captain, etc. |
