| Home Made Lures I have been busy lately having a go at making my own lures including krill/sand eel type stainless steel lures and mackerel pattern floating plugs. The stainless steel ones have been very successful and have caught loads of schoolie bass, garfish and pollack. I have yet to catch on the plugs but I tried one of the diving ones this morning and it works really well in the water. The plugs are made from old hardwood table legs that I have in the workshop on the lathe then painted using an airbrush. I did the black stripes by hand as I haven't worked out how to use stencils without the paint running under the stencil yet. I have just bought a load of water based paint that I will be experimenting with soon. Jon ![]() __________________ Portland Jon Anyone can catch 'em when they are there. | Re: Home Made Lures They all came out the same colour as that's all I had, I'm working on some more and practicing my scale patterns using the airbrush. I just can't bring myself to spend a fortune on a lure when I can make it myself. I enjoy making them as much as I enjoy using them. | Re: Home Made Lures John, they look truely AWESOME! I've had a go at this myself and I really can't describe how difficult it is to get plugs to look like that (never managed it myself!) Are they through wired Jon? And what are you using a top coat? I haven't got access to a lathe, so apart from the paint I found getting the plugs symetrical was the hardest part. Have you been trying the mesh method for scale patterns? Take some practice apparently, but does give good results when you get it right. ![]() __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. | Re: Home Made Lures Hi Rich Thanks for the comments, they are wired through then the hole is filled with epoxy. I have some mesh and will be trying it this week, the top coat is just spray lacquer from Halfords. The paint underneath is Humbrol enamel and there was a reaction between this and the lacquer but when it dried it gave a nice ripple to the finish so was not a problem. I can make you a few blanks if you want to try them? Cheers Jon __________________ Portland Jon Anyone can catch 'em when they are there. | Re: Home Made Lures Cheers Marty. The cutlery comes from charity shops, I have hundreds of them. I suppose I could make a load to sell but it's not worth it with cheap lures from the far east. The good thing about mine though is that they will never rust as they are stainless steel. Jon __________________ Portland Jon Anyone can catch 'em when they are there.
