help with my multiplier set up!

Guys,

havn't been on for a while busy working no fishing

But I managed to get a week away in North West Wales and sneak out each night to do some scratching for Dogs, Flatties and Whiting.

I had no problem a few years ago with an Abu Garcia 14ft Multiplier rod and an ABU C3

Well I thought I would treat myself to one the basic ABU's from veals for £45 squid (they appear exactly the same as my old C3). I matched it up with a Penn Powerstick 3 piece Multiplier rod, loaded the reel with a daiwa Tournament and bingo! quite a few birds nests - which as you know ruin the reel for the rest of the session.

Fortunatly I also use a Grauvell and trusted Daiwa EmblemZ so not a disaster!

Never having had this problem in the past I think the issue may be the rod not being very progressive, could it be the line? or is it just that I have the lost the knack?

If no solution there is a £45 Abu for sale at £30

Barrie

the first thing that comes to mind is- are the brake blocks fitted or still in a cellophane package in the box.

Re: help with my multiplier set up!

Trial and error barrie is the key .... start off with the brakes full on and let them off as you gain confidence .... you will get there !!!!

Re: help with my multiplier set up!

Doesn't sound like one you can let the brakes off!
Hopefully it has centrifugal blocks .... as post above, then make sure you start with two medium/large blocks.

Bearings may be bushes, in any case use some red rocket fuel or three-in-one type oil SPARINGLY! If it's still lively, try a slight smear only of gear oil like STP at the ends of the spool spindle.

Then try under-filling the spool by at least 2mm with 15lbs line (0.35mm) and don't forget enough shock leader (50lbs min) to put half dozen turns on the reel when about to cast.
Still got problems, then you'll have to see a reel specialist or casting coach.

Best of luck.

Re: help with my multiplier set up!

Thanks Guys,

All good advice - its a strange reel this one, brake blocks are already fitted and from a link to the "senor Tuna" site I looked at a guy do rebuilds on ABU's.

From that I had a poke around in mine and found it has 1 Bearing (handle side) and 1 bush!
Probably does not account for my poor use of the reel - just seemed odd that i could perform perfect casts a while back.

What was actually happening was:

1. I would make a good cast - controlling the spool at deceleration

or

2. I would get an instant birds nest

as if the shockleader knot was snagging - again never had a problem with this before

I will get out in daylight and start off slow and see if I can find the problem, with the advice above.

One thing though: I do want to replace the 1 bush for a bearing, anyone know where I can find one?

Thanks guys

barrie

Re: help with my multiplier set up!

Re: Ball bearings

I'm lucky to have a ball bearings specialist up the road from me; for some reason he doesn't advertise (imports to trade, I think).
I take some in and he finds the same for me.

Pete Coogan will sort you - 0151 677 3609

Or try Yellow Pages etc. Ball races/ball bearing manufacturers.

To be honest, although my 5000 series reels are tourney converted (CT cage and ball bearings), the only noticeable difference under fishing conditions was the quieter 'wail' when casting.

Re: help with my multiplier set up!

This might be of Use:

http://www.smbbearings.com/index.htm

They do the 4 X 10 X 4 for the ABU "inboard bearings" 6500 etc

and the 3 X 10 X4 for the Outboard Bearings ABU 7 etc

In bearing speak its id X od X Height to measure bearings

Will let you know how I get on
