Abu 6500 CS to CT conversion.

Has anybody ever converted a 6500 CS to a CT? As far as I can make out, I'm going to need a new cage (~£25) and a new brass washer to replace the level wind drive cog in the mag end.

Also, I'd like to put a power handle on it, but seem to remember someone saying the extra stress (!?!?!) put on the gears can cause problems?

Anyone ever done this before?

Re: Abu 6500 CS to CT conversion.

You won't need a new cage, but you will need a professionally fitted replacement bar and stainless studs put in the holes. This guy is the best in the business and he'll give you a quote on the phone.

Re: Abu 6500 CS to CT conversion.

I put a power handle on mine when I done a conversion. Had no problems with it and it lasted me another couple of years.

The Florida Orange 6500 Mag Elite and the Chrome Rocket both have a power handle fitted as standard so don't worry about damaging the gears simply because you put on a power handle. Both those reels have exactly the same gears as in your Mag Elite. If you use the rod and reel correctly (which I expect you do) it won't be a problem. Just be careful when you buy the handle though as they come in two sizes - one for 5000/6000 reels and one for 7000 and bigger reels. They are available in either chrome or black.

Depending on how old your green Mag Elite is there can be a problem that you may encounter if you change the handle over on the reel. When you are casting and the the reel is in free spool the slightest knock on the power handle may engage the spool causing a crack off. This is because the older green Mag Elite has a weaker spring in the spool release mechanism. All the reels such as the Florida Orange that have a power handle fitted as standard should have a stronger spring to counteract the larger handle turning during the cast.

The problem can be remedied however. There are a number of things you can do if you experience this problem. First of all you can get someone to change the spring for the stronger spring. Another way is to use an elastic band around the right sideplate to keep the button held in position while you cast. Thirdly you can cut a small slot in the front of the silver release button. This will let you push it in and lock the button onto the sideplate as you cast. The spool won't engage till you push the button back.

Your green Mag Elite may be a newer reel that already has the stronger spool release mechanism fitted. In that case you shouldn't have a problem.

If you do have a problem Pete Coogan is a good person to discuss this with. He's a respected Abu reel mechanic. His number is 0151 6773609 or 07740 306500. Pete will probably have any part you need to do the conversion.

Re: Abu 6500 CS to CT conversion.

Fantastic advice from people who obviously know what they're talking about. It's what the forums all about.I'll be talking to Pete as soon as I have the funds to buy the bits (I'm going to go get another rod tomorrow, can't justify the outlay at the moment!) but as soon as I've got the bits, I'm going to do a full picture tutorial on the conversion.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Cheers again for the advice.

Re: Abu 6500 CS to CT conversion.

While we're on the subject of Abus here's a link to a tutorial on servicing an Abu over on another forum. The reel's not a Mag Elite but apart from the mag mechanism which you don't really have to service anyway everything else is the same. If your reel's a CT just ignore the bit about the level wind. It show how to upgrade your drag to the carbon matrix drag washers that are fitted as standard on the new Abu reels.
