Sprats

I was in tesco's today, and noticed they had Sprats on sale for £1.31 a pound, so I bought some for a bit of pike and zander dead baiting, I just wondered if anyone had used them for sea fishing, are they any good and if so what species would I be targeting with them?

Re: Sprats

at the moment the bristol channel is full of them, spoiling the cod fishing.all the fish we have caught have had them in their guts,so would have to say good bait for cod.

Crusader is on a distinguished road
Re: Sprats

I would be surpised if this question has not been asked over the last millenium or so, I can only assume that if they were any good we would know about it? I may be wrong though

Re: Sprats

Too delicate for float fishing for macks and gars, IMHO.

Fish feeding on them (cod, whiting, bass) become preoccupied and usually feeding away from the bottom.

Find a shoal in the Solent in the winter months and you usually find schoolies under them; feathers are deadly at this time .... rarely are the bass more than 2lbs. (How many of us carry white feathers in the winter months???).

In 50 or so years of cod fishing on the E and S coasts of the UK, I've never seen a cod caught on sprats.

As someone said they can be deadly as a tipped bait for dabs and sometimes for flounders.

Re: Sprats

delicate?!

they are more fragile than some baits agreed but you can keep them on the hook no problem..

when we get a run of sprats down here (which didnt happen last year ) its usually august/september time and sprat becomes good bait for almost anything that swims!

ive had great fun fishing oddicome beach catching doggy after doggy on sprats...

its also good bait for the mullet (beats mackerel flesh hands down!)

and of course the mackerel and garfish love it too

Re: Sprats

i've always found them too delicate for my style of fishing and have rarely used them.

but now i've a d-vice i might see if that helps presentation.

Re: Sprats

Well I tried the sprats as bait on Saturday, and the only thing I caught with them was a baby Bull Huss, it was taking the sprat head first and seemed very reluctant to let it go.

I think I will try these again, they held up quite well, but I did use a load of elastic on them, they looked a bit like sandeels by the time I had bound them on
