Pouting or Poor Cod

If your after pouting try the river medway, thats all you ever seem to catch over here lol

I used to catch dozens of Whiting in the Medway when I lived over that way in the early eighties & a lot of Flounder too. Obviously things have changed a bit...

I thought that top one was a poor cod when i first saw it . . . was just too shy to say anything

the scales on a poor cod should be much bigger to a pout and they come away from the fish much easier...

For those not used to seeing the two regularly they are quite difficult to differentiate that two. A bit like a plaice and a flounder with lots of orange spots.

Here is one of each under the same lighting conditions

Pout - note bands, bronzy sheen, white underneath, deep body,

and by contrast below

Poor Cod - note that pearly lustre on the belly,and a delicate coppery sheen on the back, less deep body than pout, longer snout.

Just a note: The bands are not always visible on immature Pout.

with a pout its bum is in the middle of the dorsal fin, with a poor cod its not in the middle... also with poor cod you will find your hands covered in scales...
