Barracuda?

Perhaps not the right place for this but haven't seen anywhere more appropriate... (might suggest an international section)

I live in Lanzarote and have been told there are loads off the local harbour - however, IŽm damned if I can catch any. Have tried plugs and float with live bait to no avail. Does anyone have any experience of the species and able to offer a few tips to a relative beginner?

Re: Barracuda?

Sorry mate not much help here.
I once fished for them in Tiomen and had them follow lures and live baits but no takes.

Re: Barracuda?

Finding it very frustrating not being able to get one, all the local divers tell me there are plenty - seems like a natural progression from the pike fishing I did as a teenager...

Can't speak specifically for barracuda in Lanzarote but there's a good chance it might as I know that anglers in the Caribbean go to the extent of using black swivels to avoid cuda striking at silver ones and cutting them off. If they strike at a silver swivel there's really no reason why they wouldn't go for a silver spinner. Barracuda have sharp teeth so you really need to use a length of wire leader to avoid cut offs.

Re: Barracuda?

That makes sense. I was hoping to get out late afternoon today (only a couple of minutes to the harbour so I can get out whenever I can make the time usually) - but time ran away with me. Might nip around to the tackle shop tomorrow though and have a look for something that fits the bill. Unfortunately wonŽt be able to try until next week now as we are off to Madrid for the weekend...

Re: Barracuda?

i had loads of them in mexico, we use live garfish around the jettys and trolled dead garfish on the boats
i also had 1 in cyprus, that 1 was on a j13 rapala diving plug
we used wire traces and a single 6/0 hook. and then we unclip the trace and put a new one on , later on when the cuda was dead we removed the hook/trace
might be some help, good luck
