Re: flounder fishing

I'm no expert but I would say 2 hook flapper, rag or lug, small hooks, I use 1's.

Beach is good, I have noticed best time ( for the ones I caught anyway)...was as the tide came in and when the tide went out.
High water never produced a lot for me anyway...but I might be totally wrong here, as I don't do a lot of sea fishing...but that'll change in the New Year

Re: flounder fishing

Estuaries are better if you have one close to you

Worm or peeler crab will catch 'em on size 1 or 2 hooks, running ledger or 2 hook paternoster/wishbone rigs are the most widely used

As twiddler says the most productive times are when the tide is running, they dont move around much when the tide slackens so you wont catch 'em as much

Re: flounder fishing

I'll use either a 2 hook flapper or, more often than not a straight running leger, simples best as always! Choose your mark and fish it during all states of the tide, that way you'll suss out the best times, start from a couple hours before low to high, 2 rods, one close one out a bit, moving baits are good, inquisitive fish, flounder. If you have a clean bottom(! HA!) try reeling in slowly every so often to stimulate interest, just a couple of feet at a time, every 5 minutes or so. Have fun.

Re: flounder fishing

I'd look to get some movement into the bait, running ledger with size 2 hook probably as good a rig as any, match the bait to where you're fishing i.e. over a worm bed use worm initially but certaining try small peeler baits, also try tipping off with tiny strip of squid.
As dogmax says if you're fishing clean ground, i'd try a couple of slow retrieves over different areas (try to retrieve then stop, etc, but also very slow retrieve all the way in one go), it's also worth getting onto the mark at low tide - if this doesn't risk death by drowning in mud (not nice) as i know that flounder often leave tell talk marks in the mud as to where they have fed, as they will burrow into the top centimetre or so to locate worms etc, and often leave a hole in the mud surrounded by a frilled pattern (honest i've seen a video on the subject - how sad is that!)

Got if from Padstow Angling Centre in Cornwall (they do mail order) it's called "Spoilt for Choice 1 & 2" and features the shop owner Ed Schliffke (top bloke, fished with him a couple of times this year on hols) , it covers conger, bass, skate, flounder, wrasse all sorts and is a good reminder of how simple works best, it isn't made to Hollywood standards but it is a really good source of information and well worth a watch.

Re: flounder fishing

Hi. ed schliffke In padstow is the top man in cornwall for sea angling. Also his shop is one of the best as well.I go over there now & again to have a look round. Also the next street from my house is the guy. who invented the red-gill fishing lures & thay still make them from a shed in the back garden. You can get them a lot cheaper if you knock on the door. All the best martin.
