Scarborough Reels

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new poster with an interest in Scarborough Reels. David Storey auther of 'The Codling Crouch' and Dave Meads (he's in the picture in the article on Hawsker in last month's Sea Angler) have both been very helpful in pointing me toward Edwin Peart (unfortunately passed away) and his hand made Oil Bath Bearing Scarborough Reels made in Pritchard's Tackle Shop in Eastborough, Scarborough in the 70's. I have a Rheubon Heaton 7" Centre Pin with Tufnol side plates and brass fittings, but I'm looking to try and get hold of one of the Oil Bath reels, or any information any of you can offer.

Does anyone know anything about these reels? Does anyone have one they may be willing to part with? Either post a reply or PM me.

Re: Scarborough Reels

I don't know about the oil bath but they are always on ebay!
I have been looking for a good trotting reel and the Scarborough seems to crop up quite a lot.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!
Tight lines.

Richard,

Thanks for the reply. Yeh, I got mine on ebay. Haven't tried it out at sea yet. Should be a laugh!

Re: Scarborough Reels

The scarborough reels i've seen and used would'nt fit on a freshwater rod.The guy casting off the shore was probably using an Alvey. You can turn the spool thru' 90 degrees to allow the cast.

Re: Scarborough Reels

Yep, you can use Alveys, see attached Link, but that's something different. David Storey of 'The Codling Crouch' book and Dave Meads, use a form of Pendulum / Back Cast. They claim they can cast 60yds plus. See attached YouTube link with a guy Back Casting.
