Favourite Cod mark and why?

I ll start the ball rolling.
Spurn Point for me,or Spon ed as us locals call it.
A three mile spit of sand marking the end of the Holderness coast.
Many a time i would nip down midweek for a late tide and have the place to myself, windswept, desolate but beutifull all the same.
Deep water can be found off the very point itself when fishing over low water produces the best catches.
My favourite mark was the binks,a sand bar that juts out to sea from the point at low water, not as deep as the point but ive had some very good catches of cod off it.
Theres many other marks along the length of the point and if fishing in the sea is poor then you can always nip 30 yards over the dunes to fish the mud flats,oh and you can dig worms here aswell.
All in all its fishing heaven as with most of the Holderness coast
Right back to scrating those south coast coddling out

Re: Favourite Cod mark and why?

For me, a boat mark off the Isle of Wight. It is a spit running south into the Spoil Grounds, drops 90ft down into 150ft. It's good because it is a challenge. I need a settled forecast (in winter!?) and a small tide to be worth even trying to get there. I want to be there right through the flood, as the slack water either side can be most productive. Then I need to get the anchoring right, putting the pick in on the top of the bank and dropping back to mid-bank on the warp to drop the baits slap in the gutter. Not so easy as the ground is very loose, the anchor often drags a fair way before it bites.
Add all those together with the preference of my usual buddy boat skippers for marks further north and I'm lucky to get one good shot at it a season. It's a good feeling when everything has dropped into place, the baits are down and holding and the next few hours will decide whether it is going to be or not this year!

Re: Favourite Cod mark and why?

for me it has to be the Cardiff Foreshore

why???

it could be the 2 mile walk around the heliport on thin eroded paths over 10-12 foot drops...really gets your senses ready for the anticipated bites!!!
or it could be the industrial/rubble view of the beach.....
or could it be the melodic and theraputic russell of rats the size of border collies which pinch your bait quicker than the gypsies nicking your car...oh i forgot to mention that one......

does throw up a good amount of cod though so all worth it

Re: Favourite Cod mark and why?

guess mine is the foreshore aswell although the deeps do throw up a few surprises now and again. you gotta love them gypo's though. lost count of the amount of nicked cars they used to weigh in at my yard just around the corner from the foreshore and they all used the name smith

Re: Favourite Cod mark and why?

chesil , abbotsbury.

why- its the only place i've caught codling and that was last week, besides a v small one at hurst shingle 15 year ago. that were a neap tide in september too.

abbotsbury- easy access to deep water, although i'm told there are better marks along the chesil , this ones easy to walk to and shows cod/codling most seasons, favored marks along this section are the dragons teeth to the east or the cottages to the west but anywhere will do for lazy gits like me who arn't too keen on walking these days.

60yrd cast will do the job but it needs a stir up to get them feeding hence the need to often cast into a s/w head wind , s/w force 4-5 imho is manageable, but 6 and above from this quarter creates large swells ,backwash/undertow and the steep loose shingle is a mantrap.
