1 up rigs?

Hi all,
Just wondering has anyone used a 1 up rig clipped by a bait clip above the snood? havnt heard anything about these rigs... was intending too use this for cod, rays, smuts, anything that takes the bait on the sea bed.

Thanks,
Dan.

Re: 1 up rigs?

Used it for close in baits, helps keep the bait from flapping during casting but 10/20 yards, I guess does not make much difference ?

Re: 1 up rigs?

To my mind you lose all the advantages of tucking the bait up behind the slipstream of the lead. I like to use an impact shield just behind the lead to clip down; but you can buy flat-top leads with built-in clips which do the same thing.

The only possible advantage I can see in clipping up (rather than down) is that the bait will not be blown up the snood. Counter that with 'clipped-down' by using a sequin locked behind the bait with a stop knot or similar ....

Even a largish multi-lug bait will cast better like this -

A simple rig like this can be adapted to plaice with a wishbone/bead arrangement or simply add the sequin bait stop for worm baits for codling etc.

Re: 1 up rigs?

Gremlin is spot on about bait behind the lead but a clip up can work sometimes.

I only use a clip up rig for big baits close in with a short trace, I use a short trace with the swivel at the bottom to allow the bait to sit on the bottom, the clip up is a useful rig so the bait does not flap around when casting.

I generally use a long flowing trace and is much better to use a clip at the top of the rig so the snood goes from the bottom swivel - over the clip and back down so sits behind an impact shield or flat back lead. Will also cast a bit further.

For long distance big bait casting - gremlins single clip down is the way to go every time IMHO ....

Hope that helps Dan ...

Re: 1 up rigs?

Hello Dan
The big disadvantage of having the clip above the snood is that during the cast the bait and hook are facing the wrong way and the casting inertia can make the bait mask the hook etc.

If you want a clip down rig that gives you a long flowing trace from just above the lead so that the bait sits tight to the bottom then use an up and over or a pennel dropper.
Regards John

Re: 1 up rigs?

Risking banning by plugging my own product, could I possibly suggest you consider using a Dvice. One up, pulley or running, no clips, any length hooklink, and cast further than a plain lead with clips, if the 189 yards with a whole squid is anykind of a measure. Just makes all the process so much simpler. www.dvice.co.uk

Re: 1 up rigs?

A shameless plug indeed Rob - banned for life ...... although a re-instatement could be arranged on supply of a years worth of DVice
