Hi Carlton,

Strip the multiplier down and oil the spindle and bearings with 40 grade motor oil for the time being. BE CAREFUL NOT to get oil on the drag washers or you'll have no drag at all. When you have it under control you can move back to a thinner oil.

There were probably spare/bigger brake blocks in the with the reel when you bought it. If the plastic brake blocks on your multiplier are white and the spares are black, change them over. The black ones are normally bigger and add a lot more braking to your reel. Two blocks should be enough when combined with the oil, but you can add more if it's really bad.

DON'T screw the knobs on the end plates right up tight as you will end up wearing the spindle ends as these will have butted right up to knob, which over time will reduce the braking to near zero. Pinch up the knob and then back off until you just have the smallest of side to side play in the spindle.

Don't let the lead hit the grass or water without putting your thumb on the line to slow it all down. It's much better to pull the cast up a bit shorter until you get used to using the multiplier. With time you will be able to control exactly where the lead enters the water with your thumb.

There is a tendency to watch the lead when you first start casting as your looking to see how far you can lob the thing, but when your practising with a multiplier try and watch the reel and you'll see the line start to lift when the lead begins to slow down. This is the time to apply a little thumb pressure to the line. Keeping an eye on the reel is more difficult than you first imagine. If you have a racey reel like the Abu 6500 or Penn 525 and the braking is backed off, the line will start to lift well before the lead hits the grass or water.

Hope this helps.
Cheers
Paul.

EDIT: Start off with a 100 or so really easy casts of no more than say 30 or 40 metres. After about 50 you'll feel the reel begin to loosen up as it runs itself in. You'll need to re-adjust again.

Ben,

The Solent seems pretty quiet at the moment apart from Magazine Lane. I have fished Weston Shore and Hamble recently and it's dead. Mag Lane always seems to turn up something.

What bait are you using Ben. The Solent is ragworm, ragworm, ragworm with a tip of mackeral or squid mate. Are you fishing too heavy? With the exception of Magazine Lane you can lighten up the end tackle a fair bit as it's generally mud and sand bottom. Change your bait every cast/15 mins too, as it seems to get washed out really quickly. What hook sizes are you using. For the flatties I drop right down to a size 4 sometimes a 6 if bites are a bit thin on the ground.
