Re: Freezing Peeler

Peel the backshell, remove lungs and wrap individually in a small piece of tin foil to protect against freezer burn.

Put them in a freezer bag and freeze rapdily.

:)

Re: Freezing Peeler

Hi

Thanks for the replies,Could I ask the forum a couple of questions about peelers, where abouts are the lungs and what do they look like....

Also you say prior to freezing, take the back shell and the lungs out, when you use the frozen peeler after defrost do you leave the legs on when baiting the hook....

Sorry about all the questions but I've not used peeler before and not sure which to use them,I would be very grateful if anyone can tell my which way they are used....

Many thanks Jamie

Re: Freezing Peeler

As mentioned you really must make shure all the lungs are removed or they will be tainted,i them wrap in cling film.

cod head is on a distinguished road
Re: Freezing Peeler

i take all of the shell off then freeze them, you can even peel the legs its abit tricky but add a couple to a bait it makes it more attractive.

Re: Freezing Peeler

Jez, it annoys the hell out of me when folks refer to 'lungs' in crabs. They're bruddy CRUSTACEANS, OK? They don't even look like lungs!!!

They don't have bloody lungs!!!
They have gills .. you know like fishees!

There is so much krap talked about freezing and using peelers.

They are a fine bait, when used effectively (like any bait!). They are not MAGIC or a BLUEY-STYLE 'WONDERBAIT'! (wot a good joke that was!)

You wouldn't believe the thousands of pounds worth of bought peelers I've seen used to no effect.
This season is a good example on the S Coast. Smuts a plenty!
85p peelers used in abundance ... very effective for smuts and baby bream (and eels).
Just as effective for smuts ... free peeler spiders hanging out to dry at the bottom of every groyne between Hastings and Weymouth!
Too lazy? Live too far away? Make the effort and get to an estuary or river mouth or bridge and collect 30 small hardbacks ... nothing bigger than an inch across. Use two or three on a 3/0 and catch your ration of smuts for free!

Wanna freeze left-over peelers? Just rinse in fresh water and freeze on cold trays. Wrap in cling film. They'll keep fine for 6 weeks like this.

Really need to keep for 3 months??? OK, rinse, peel, quick freeze!

Remove the GILLS?
50 years has taught me that it's totally unnecessary!
If fish don't wanna eat 'em; they spit 'em out! Seen a cod or bass stuffed full of hardbacks. Did they dissect out the gills first? Or remove the shells? Of course not!

Cor calm down mate, yes lots of people do collect there own peelers, some dont and choose to buy them ,there choice.
30 years fishing has taught me that frozen peeler with the LUNGS out will outfish frozen peeler with LUNGS in.
Why do the decent tackle shops spend hours removing the Lungs before they freeze them?
Fish regulary eat hardbacks and there not bothered about the Lungs, but when frozen the lungs do taint the rest of the crab.

CHILL MATE
PS I agree with you about the blueys
