| Re: crab menace In a word ... NO. Flatties (mainly) feed on the bottom; so do crabs. Over the years folks have tried various 'floating devices' (corks/styrafoam etc), but that can be self-defeating. You'll probably end up catching fewer flatties. Where you can practice it, proper flounder-spooning from a boat keeps the bait on the move which is attractive to flounders and plaice; but is classically performed by rowing/trolling slightly faster than the tide (from 'Flatfish - How to Catch Them' by 'Seangler'; a classic 50's publication). Better to cast to where you think the flounders are and twitch your trace back to you or take a turn or two on your reel every minute or two. That will keep you busy and changing baits when they get nibbled and damaged by the crabs. Most flatties can't resist a moving bait! |
