Painting rods! can it be done?

Hi all, I have a very old rod but its a classic lol well its modern had it years. However the paint is coming off... I t was that cheap I was thinking of respraying it.. put some life back into it.. Any ideas on what paint would be best .ie paint that doesnt come off when the rod bends etc. Would car paint be any good or would that come off. ?

Re: Painting rods! can it be done?

i have done it,i used a car paint spray, i didn't know whether it would work or not,but i gave it a few coats of varnish when it was dry and its still on their,
i too was worried about the flexing of the rod cracking the paint but it didn't seem to happen,
best of luck mate

Yes! not a problem at all. Try to find Createx (Auto-Air) brand. The types used to paint motorcycle gas tanks and fenders, helmets, plastic fenders and the like.
Let us know how it turns out.

Re: Painting rods! can it be done?

I know cellulose car paint (the kind in most spray cans) is very easily scratched unless it is baked on after spraying. Most car repairs go into a low bake oven for some time, its not so hot that it melts plastic. So if you know any paint sprayes ask em to put your painted rod in the oven on the next job and it will be much improved. Alternativley after spraying keep the rod in an airing cupboard for a week or two and the paint will harden (cure) in time.

Its also quite hard to paint a rod, the paint tends to run round the rod and cause drips, you have to be very sparing with the spray and build up coats rather than trying to do it in one go.

If your doing a proper job you will be removing all the rings and replacing them so if you add the cost of rings, paint, varnish, the new kitchen table (after you discover its covered in paint) then it starts to look expensive.

I once sprayed a car in my garage, i left the doors open to be able to breath, when i had finished i stepped outside to view my wonderful willow green mini van. My wife then pointed out her line of willow green washing! The dam stuff drifts a long way.

With the price of reasonable rods nowadays i would just buy a new one and instead paint the living room for the wife. That way you get brownie points to go fishing.
