| Novice needing a bit help.... Hi all I've just bought myself a new rod and reel, the Rod is 13ft greys GRX-S 5oz,and the reel is a Abu 6500 cs Pro rocket.... I've been out day on the football field practicing my casting,I was doing really well with it,but on 2 ocassions the shock lead came off the main line resulting into 2 birds nests,is there anything that I can do to stop this from happening.... I look forward to hearing your replies.... Many thanks Jamie |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... What knot are you using to attach the leader ?????......you can add a tiny drop of super glue which will stop the knot unravelling .. |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... yea sounds like a knot problem.. do those reels have a level wind too? maybe thats what is pulling the knot __________________ fishing for fish is not as simple as you may think! |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... Hi Jamie, I'm not an expert, far from it, but I use a blood knot, with a spot of super glue (like Mike suggests) and then I slide half an inch of rig tube over the knot while the glue's still wet. I do use a multiplier with a level wind sometimes and the knot and rig tube go through OK. Might be worth a try. you can find the knot here : http://www.animatedknots.com/bloodkn...matedknots.com __________________ Rich "If a thing's worth doing it's worth doing to excess!" |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... Hi all Thanks for the replies, the first knot was a blood knot that the shop assistant fixed up for me,then I attempted another blood knot after the first line breakage, but it did'nt work.... I'll try the superglue, after I master the blood knot lol.... Does the rig tubing come on a roll and what price is it approx.... Many thanks Jamie |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... I have always used the Allbright knot for attaching shock leader to mainline, never had it crack off whilst casting, all though it will break off at the mainline if you get snagged. It is quiet easy to tie and I have not been fishing for that long ( less than a year ). have a look at thread Great fishing knot site or try this site as well http://www.netknots.com/html/fishing_knots.html Mike __________________ Life is brief and fragile. | Re: Novice needing a bit help.... Hi all Sorry I made a mistake about type of knot that was used it was an allbright knot and not the bloodknot that I said in previous post.... Cheers Jamie |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... Jamie, is the knot undoing or breaking? if it is undoing then try this :- I found in the early days of tying it that it would slip, Greenheart showed me how to put an overhand knot in the in the end of the shockleader to make it more secure. These days I tighten the knot by pulling the 2 lines neatly together whilst holding the loose end of the mainline in my teeth at rightangles to the two lines, these seems to stop the coils of the allbright slipping over the end of the shockleader as you tighten. If it is breaking then ensure you have moistened the line, mono filament line weakens as it gets hot and the friction from pulling the knot tight can damage the line strength severely. you say you are using a multiplier, are you feathering the line or just stopping it with your thumb, feathering reduces the strain on the line and hence the shock to the knots. __________________ Life is brief and fragile. | Re: Novice needing a bit help.... Hi Mithrandir I'm not sure I know what you mean by feathering, could you please explain,I've been using my thumb to slow the reel at the end of the cast.... I've also been messing about with the braking on the side of the reel to stop it over running, but I'm a total novice and have a lot to learn.... Cheers Jamie |

| Re: Novice needing a bit help.... feathering is when you slow the reel to stop the cast, normally you apply very gentle pressure to tighten the line then stop it at the desired spot. applying sudden pressure will stop the line but cause a spring back of the lead as the line overtightens and stretches, then bounces back, giving you a short cast and loads of slack line. I am still trying to master this too but have not managed to crack off a lead and shockleader. I did have one thought, are you using tapered shockleader or a single diameter, if using tapered then a double uni knot works well as the lines have similar diameters. __________________ Life is brief and fragile.
