| Went fishing yesterday in one of the most "tony" suburbs of Sydney, next to the shark proof net......Balmoral Beach. I had a mid-week rostered day off,oh how the other half live, seems like NOBODY works in this place ,they were all wandering up and down the esplanade.Me and my grubby mates in our fishing/squidding gear were ignored until we landed 3 (1 each) Australian Salmon........then we were the centre of attention. Our status immediately rose from homeless bums to dirty eccentric fishermen! Most of the ladies who lunch and their attendent children who came for a look had NO idea that these "Salmon" were not the sea-pen raised Atlantic/Pacific salmon from Tasmania that taste absolutely delicious but a bastard native with the same common name. They are barely edible (Mother-in-law fish) and when cooked in a can go a revoting grey colour. They are however on of the great light tackle sportfish, no teeth, powerful fast swimmers, clean fighters and acrobatic to boot. The fish we caught weighed 5-7lb and were in prime condition . We did keep 1 as one of our number had a smoker and we had a recipe for smoking these fish.I have yet to taste it Sorry no pics as I have yet to work out how to do it direct from a mobile phone (Nokia N 73) |
