Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

It’s that time of year when I get a bit bored and I was wondering whether any of you have any funny or weird fishing stories that have happened to you over the years.

I’ll start off with a few funny and strange stories that I and my mates have experienced over the years.

My mate Terry and I were Carping at night on a local Estate lake in Hertfordshire which is supposed to be haunted and which is surrounded in woodland; we were fishing 3 or 4 swims apart on a corner.

At around 11pm another mate of ours Gino came round walking his red setter dog and whispered to me “Wheres Terry?”, I replied “about 3 or 4 swims further round the corner”, Gino said “keep quiet, keep a straight face and don’t let on that I’m here” then he crept into the woods behind Terry and let out an almighty spine chilling scream”.

“Keith is that you?” cried Terry, “No” It’s not me” I said; “have you got your mallet? shouted Terry trying to sound big and brave; then Terry suddenly saw a strange dark figure leaping towards him through the trees and sank to his knees; and the dark figure jumped right up onto Terrys shoulders… and started licking his face, and of course it was Gino’s dog and we all burst into laughter. Terry walked funny the rest of that night.

It was my mate Terry that told me the story of when he was fishing a small stream with a herd of cows in the field behind him.
One of these cows came up behind him and started to nudge through all his tackle on the ground.

“Give it a bang on its nose!, that’ll get rid of her” shouted a voice from further up on the other side of the stream, so Terry clenched his fist and gave the cow a knock on the nose, but the cow just looked up at Terry and then continued nudging through terrys stuff.

“No give it a really hard blow on its nose, don’t just tap it!” said the voice, so terry clenched his fist again and gave the cow an almighty bang on its nose” wherebye the cow went nuts and head butted terry and his tackle right into the stream.

“Run!” shouted the voice from across the stream and Terry saw a figure scrambling away into the distance on the other side of the stream.

Another Story that my mate Terry told me was when he was Carping one chilly moonlit night around the haunted Estate lake with another friend of ours and it was very quiet night with no fish activity on the water and there was mist coming up off the surface of the lake.

About 1am Terry has a bleep on his buzzer so he got ready to strike. Then his buzzer signalled a very slow run and his bobbin rose up to meet his rod, and terry struck and felt something fighting on the other end of his line, then the fight suddenly stopped.
There was still something large on the end of his line so he continued to wind in only to find a Carp of around 12 or 13lb which was stone dead with it’s eyes rotted away and which had obviously been dead for quite a while, and it was hooked squarely in the corner of it’s mouth.

Then there was the time when we were walking around the estate lake before a match checking that no-one was fishing and we came across the body of an old lady lying crumpled up in the long grass at the other end of the lake.

We hurried back to our cars and told the other people who were waiting for the draw and a gang of us went back to the body to have another look before calling the police, and someone bent down and shook the body which suddenly burst into life. It was an old drunk female tramp who was sleeping off a drunken night on the meths.

Tell us about your funny or weird experiences while fishing.

Tight lines

Keith (BoldBear)

Re: Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

Great stories there keith,
I remember when my mates dad took us on our first night fishing session on the Trent , we were only about 12 but we were quite sensible so the plan was for his dad to drop us off, stay a few hours then leave us until the morning.
We set up and began chatting away when his dad started telling us a story about the farm house behind us, aparantly in the last depression before ww2 an old farmer was on the verge of losing all his land and his wife, kids ect, so decided to hang himself in the tree behind us at the bottom of the farm. and aparrantly he still haunts the tree and on some nights you can hear the rope creaking and him gurgling and moaning.
Then the git left us for the night bricking it. after much discussion between ourselves whether he was just trying to scare us or not we started hearing branches shaking and a low moaning voice coming from the tree. needless to say we were quite scared but knew it must be someone playing a prank , but then a loose branch from another tree started shaking violently as well as the hanging tree. then it seemed liked every fricking tree and bush was shaking in the area. By then we were soiling ourselves with fear lol, until it climaxed with some dead farmer jumping from behind the tree ... we started to leg it until we heard familiar laughter coming from the "dead farmer". turned out the previous day my mates dad had rigged the trees and bushes with fishing line and had parked up a mile down the lane and walked to the peg to scare us. We put on a brave face for reputations sake but we were like two scared chickens really !

Re: Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

Some 20 odd years ago myself and three mates fished a stretch of the Avon in Pershore, Worcester. From memory we actually fished in someone's back garden after pleading with the owner who we bumped into on the High St, all he said to us was "Carry on but be careful". It was a really wet day and rained constantly but we all caught to a degree but we all felt slightly uneasy, there was just something that felt strange that you couldn't put your finger on. Anyway while we were packing up my friend Tony took a photo of me and his brother Gary "larking about" on the bank, in those days camera films had to be developed so it was a few weeks until I got the pictures back - every single picture was blank except for the one of me and Gary which showed us stood about three feet apart with someone who looked over 6 ft tall dressed in robes stood between us. Unfortunately the photo has long since disappeared (I was blamed for that) but thinking about it still makes me shudder.

Re: Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

This is not a Ghost story but the previous thread from MozLongTime reminded me of it:

A few years ago when I was younger; a friend of mine (Budgie Burgess) and I were both fishing a Weir for Chub and Barbel at night on the river Kennet. On the other side of this weir was a private front garden and I think the weir was private as well so we fished it with no lights on which would give our presence away.

At around 12pm the front light of the house went on and a woman in her dressing gown came out to walk her dog along her garden path so we bent down low so that we couldn't be seen.

I had previously felt some soft balls on my trainers and thought it was those annoying seed pods that stick to your clothes but in the light I saw that my trainers laces were covered in wasps (I must have been standing right on top of a wasps nest) and I let out a muffled yelp and run away stamping my feet which immediately gave me away.

Another figure that we didn't realise was there and was fishing a few swims away also scarpered as well.

Luckily I dont remember getting properly stung although I did feel the occasional sharp stab through my jeans and socks but I thought that it was just the odd stinging nettle or something similar before the light came on.

Re: Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

A few years ago i was fishing down Florida Keys for various species and i hooked and lost what we think was a goliath grouper which ran into the legs of a oil platform,so i baited up again with the skippers advice still ringing in my ears about not giving these fish an inch cast out my bait and tightened down on my clutch and not long after i had another great take and with the skips voice still ringing in my ears i pulled as hard as i could to stop said fish from getting in the rigs feet the trouble was i was only in a 6 metre sport fisher and as i pulled like hell the line snapped and i went straight overboard in all my glory lol

Re: Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

I once arranged a night fishing trip with my mate, got to the beach andpromptly set my tent up. We then fished the night tide till 3-4am before going to sleep. I woke up and it was nice and sunny so I stepped out the tent and to my amazement I was surrounded by lots of nude OAP`s!!!!! Turns out it was a nudist beach lol. Me and my mate hurridly packed our stuff away but once gent came over and wanted to talk fishing with us. It`s kinda hard to concentrate on a meaningfull convo when the fella in front of you has it all swinging in the wind!!!!!

Re: Any funny or strange fishing tales to tell us about?

Great storys guys i have a weirdish one to,
I was fishing a mid night tide at my local beach with my wife who decided to come along. It was a clear sky but the wind was getting pritty strong. Anyway i had a bite on my rod only a little tap so i said to my misses watch the glow stick on the tip of my rod and when a fish bites etc it will tap etc...
So i was watching it with her only for us both to look at each other in amazement there was a low flying triangle shapped plane'ish thingy? (if there is such a thing) slowly flying against the strong wind and didnt make one bit of noise there was no lights on it at all just looked black and triangle. as we were waiting for it to get in the moon light, to get a better picture of it, it just disapeared!!!! We tryed looking for a picture on the internet the next day but nothing even came close to what this looked like, even now it makes the hair on my neck stick up. We just cant beleave what we had seen.

Weird ey!!

Andy
