Hook sizes

I've just won a shed load of hooks on ebay, but why are the size 18,s 16's,
14's (to mention just a few) around 4 times bigger than my standard (or should i say the ones i'm used to.)
Is this a continental size ?
I've seen these on pole rigs so have seen it before & wasn't too impressed i have to say. (but can't complain when comes as a freebie with a whip i bought.)
I've been landed with 240 HTN's
60x18's to 3lb
60x16's to 3lb
60x14's to 3lb
60x12's to 4lb
60x10's to 5lb
60 x 8's to 6lb
The bigger hooks are less of an issue, but a single maggot on the 18's will look pretty stupid IMHO.

Re: Hook sizes

I think hook size relates to the gauge of the wire not the gape of the hook

Re: Hook sizes

This may be the answer, however if you buy a HTN size 18, then you should expect to recieve a hook size @ least in the spirit of it.

Re: Hook sizes

Hook sizes are not standard as they are affected by so many aspects of bend gape etc. I've got lot of hooks in 18,20,22 and I doubt any two of the so called same size are even close. Within a range though , the relative sizes of hooks is usually consistent.

Re: Hook sizes

Personally I would use double maggot on a 16 or 18, single on 20 or lower. I think a single on a size 18 does look daft. Too much hook, not enough maggot.

Re: Hook sizes

I agree hook patterns of the same size are many & varied i.e Gape. wire gauge, forged, colour, spade end, eyed, straight, offset etc, but the ones i've bought (won on ebay actually) are mde by "NGT" & the alleged 18''s & 16's, would'nt look out of place in a butchers shop. lol.
I've seen the same sort of thing on pole rigs as well.
In the words of Jim Royle "SIZE 18 MY ARSE"

Smile Re: Hook sizes

hook sizes for fly tying are of a universal size but larger hooks are sized by
the maker or so im told.I bought a job lot on e bay and wound up with about
50% scrap iron.Ah well a lesson learned...

Re: Hook sizes

I'm actually not too bothered (not much good for maggot - you'd need @ least 3 on hook to disguise it) but great size for worm / pellet /catmeat.
