Re: fishing for sturgeon

seriously though welcome to the forum, it sure is an unusual find, did you catch it, and at that weight, it is only a baby, but very nice, especially in our waters, well done

p.s. they are predatory fish, and on the red list of endangered species

Re: fishing for sturgeon

There are several smaller species of Sturgeon.

There is a commercial lake not far from Brean Sands in Somerset that holds one of the smaller species of Sturgeon, I can't remember the fishery name but I remember someone telling me about it when I was on holiday there. I think they ran into the high twenties there.
Apparently there are a few similar commercial fisheries in the UK that stock smaller species of Sturgeon or Sterlets.

These Sterlets are only mini species and are not the same as the Atlantic Sturgeon which we used to have in our rivers.

I recently read that they have been trying to reintroduce the Atlantic sturgeon on the northern coasts of Europe near the western border of Germany and that we may once again find them travelling up our rivers (Thames, Severn & Avon, Ouse etc.).
If I can find the article I will photocopy it for you.

Today very few are found in British waters and it is probably unknown in our rivers. It was common two centuries ago in our large rivers including the Severn, Avon, Thames (the remnants have been found in the medieval remains of Westminster Abbey), Ouse and some Scottish rivers. A fully grown Atlantic Sturgeon can weigh up to 318 kg (700 lb) and females can measure 3.4 metres (11 ft) or more.
I think I remember reading somewhere that the last Atlantic Sturgeon caught in the UK was in the 1930s in a river in Wales.

The Atlantic Sturgeon is also known as the European Sturgeon, the Baltic Sturgeon or the Common Sturgeon. (see here).

The largest of the Sturgeon is the 'Beluga Sturgeon' and in the Caspian Sea they have been reported up to 4400lbs in weight.
Heres a picture of < the largest Sturgeon ever caught> .

Heres some different info that I found on the web refering to the re-introduction of the Atlantic Sturgeon
http://www.esf.edu/efb/limburg/Fishe...estoration.pdf

And finally, Heres a site which gives methods that they use for catching their Sturgeon in British Collumbia in Canada.
http://www.anglingbc.com/index.cfm?page=74

Hope this helps you.

If you catch any more Sturgeon let us know, it will be good to read your report.

Re: fishing for sturgeon

Thanks for all the info. The lake ain't that big only bout 1 acre. I did land it and it weighed in at 11.5 lb but I spoke to the owner and there are bigger ones in the lake and I showed him a pic of the one I caught which they called scar, and last year came out and weighed 12.5 but sum wolly snagged up on an island while hooked on. Snapped up and scar was left tangled in the line. hense to were he got his name. Ill try to uplaod the pic.

Thanks again

Re: fishing for sturgeon

In 2007 i had a few days on the fraser river river in BC and although i didnt catch any real monsters i did have fish up to 300lb which pulled us about 2-1/2 mile down river before we banked it,we were fishing hard on the bottom with what i would describe as a sardine/sprat deadbait but i was there in late June and it was a bit to early, the white sturgeon follow the salmon runs which dont normally start until late August and then all the anglers start to use salmon eggs contained in what i can only describe as a womens tights and then tied in a knot so the bait is about 3/4 the size of a golf ball
I dont know much about the sturgeon in the UK but of the fish that i have read about in the A times they seem to have been caught by carp anglers whilst fishing for carp, sorry i cant be of anymore help but good luck and tight lines and if you do manage to get your prize i am sure we would all love to read your reports and then we would all be a little wiser
