Re: Suggestions plz

hi john, as whips up to 8 mtrs are very cheap, could you afford to get him both rod and whip, he would benefit from using both.
where will you be fishing ?

Re: Suggestions plz

Both my son and my daughter started off when they were small on light 5 to 6 metre whips so that they didn’t need to worry about learning to use a reel at first and could concentrate on enjoying catching lots of fish instead of spending most of their time (and my time) sorting out their reel tangles.

This was fine for the first season of fishing and kept them very contented catching small Roach, Gudgeon, Bleak, Perch and Dace, and it taught them how to strike, play and land fish plus a bit on loose feeding etc.

However; It wasn’t long before my son started to ask for a rod and reel so that he could catch larger fish like the Tench and small Carp he had seen me and others catch in our local lakes, so I had to also buy him a light float rod and reel.

If it where me then to start off, I would buy your son a ‘good’ whip, the type that is not elasticated but has a fine flexible tip which bends and is very light which will teach him a little about playing a fish under the rod tip; and a bit on feeding then if he wanted to progress the following year think about getting him a light rod and reel.

Re: Suggestions plz

My advice would be to buy him tackle for whatever fish "live" in your neck of the woods and take it from there !

Start letting him fish for "small" stuff as stated above and see how he goes !

Good luck with the tangles !

Ripple.
