River Swale - visiting angler options

Hi all, I'm off to the Yorks Dales (Gunnerside in Swaledale) with the family in a couple of weeks time and was hoping to dip away for an afternoon and get a rod on the Swale.

Course angler and have heard its mainly trout and grayling above Richmond, so guess I'm looking downstream of Richmond but don't want to go far beyond as it starts getting a long journey from Gunnerside.

So... Any good day-ticket stretches of the Swale close to Richmond that anyone can recommend for a bit of winter river fishing?!

Thanks

Cookie!

Re: River Swale - visiting angler options

Hi Cookie. I am probably to late with my reply but I have just seen your thread.
The River Swale can be fished above and below Richmond on a day ticket from Castle Sports in the town. They will tell you the good stretches but it has trout and grayling caught throughout the winter here. For more course fishing you could try travelling a little further to Catterick. There you will find the Catterick Complex which is situated in Catterick Village near the racecourse. Apart from the 4 course lakes on-site they have a 2 mile stretch of the Swale and in here I have caught superb chub, grayling and roach. There are also reports of barbel on this stretch although I am yet to catch one here. Tickets are £6 a day and if you dont have any luck you can always move onto one of the lakes on-site - the match lake is brilliant for a bagging day. Most of the Swale and Ure are fly only in the Swaledale area but there are some good stretches which have hardley ever been course fished. Try the river Ure at Gretta Bridge. It is owned by Thornaby club but to be honest, I have never seen anyone on it checking tickets. Not to encourage this but I am sure a few hours there wouild not be a problem. I have had Chub, grayling, trout and pike here.

Re: River Swale - visiting angler options

Hi Cookie - there's no fishing allowed in the CASTLE FALLS.
got caught there many years ago - the bailiff shouted "there's no fishin here", to which i replied "Rubbish, there's loads of fish in here".
Needless to say me & my mate had to move but fortunately bailiff saw the funny side & no harm done.

Fished the Swale further downstream at Pickhill and Gatenby but this was all on the Bradford No 1 Book.

Probably too far for you.

Ripple.
