I'm after new gear too after deciding to start again after 20 years + away.

How much did you spend and where did you get the kit from if you don't mind me asking?

Shakespeare stuff tends to be ok, if you got it cheap should be more than fine.

Id get up and running on the float gear before worrying about bite alarms and bivvys though :)

You'd need different rods and reels for carping anyway.

sounds ok shakey do ok stuff so do wychwood i think they the same firm now ,if you do venture into the carp game its a totaly diffrent sport be prepared for hours of making rigs sleeping and scanning the latest shimano and fox product ,try local carp puddles first to get a feel cut my girls teeth on pools like that ,if you do go carp way look at second hand first flebay ect as some ppl buy try then go back to float and feeder when they dont catch sid the elusive 30lb mirror as for a bivvy i have a camou brolly rap 60" with ground sheet lot cheaper and more versatile and damn warm in winter pike sessions, easily fits bed chair and i can use brolly seperate ,good luck

Thank you very much indeed, that's a great help.

i'll make a shopping list and compare online from my local tackle shop, but have a feeling i'll be shopping online depending on what the postage costs of course. Every penny counts at the moment but want to get started asap.

Re: Bought some new gear - newbie alert

maybe i will be corrected but on ebay there are some great deals on rods of all sorts and lengths, some by john wilson/matt hayes etc, cant be bad to start with surely. might be worth checking it out depending what style your after.

Re: Bought some new gear - newbie alert

For a decent river waggler, I'd recommend this Maver Abyss 13ft I got a few weeks ago. For £20 (reduced from £40) it's a bargain. I've been well pleased with it.

Bar Steward is on a distinguished road
Re: Bought some new gear - newbie alert

Absolutely nothing wrong with S/H gear. I've just started to fish again after many years
away. I didn't want to pay too much (tight fisted bar steward!!). My current rods are;
an Edgar Sealey 9ft Carpmaster, "donated", Edgar Sealey 12ft Black Arrow, Ebay, A 12ft rod with the makers name rubbed off, car-boot sale with a huge hold-all and a 7ft spinning rod fom a boat-jumble. Reels mainly from boat-jumbles (new) or Ebay.
Maybe one day... I may just get all six numbers up!!
