river severn chubbing

Hey all after givining up on the hunt for my 1st ever barbel for a while after 30blanks! I've decided to turn to head to some chub fishing, and just wondered what the best advice woule be bait and rig wise? Found a spot with plenty of cover so just need bait and rig advice if any :)

Many thanks and tight lines

Re: river severn chubbing

Where abouts you fishing?

As for chub. Try breadflake trotted or free lined under the tree roots. Crust also works well. Chub love luncheon meat too, roll it under the classic chub "raft" and you will know pretty quick if one is in residence. Spraying maggots for half an hour then trotting through can produce (but it's not a cheap option).

Chub are probably the most obliging fish out there.

One other trick that is always worth a trick is to hook a black slug and cast it JUST BEHIND a chub you can see near the surface. It should turn and grab it without a thought. If it spooks, it probably heard you coming.

Chub are not tackle shy but will spook very easily if you are heavy handed in your approach. As for the barbel mate, hang in there, it does happen eventualy and with the mighty Severn on your doorstep it should happen soon. Probably when one of those luncheon meat baits gets taken . Good luck!

Re: river severn chubbing

Fishing a stretch in worcester ( don't really wnt to say where abouts at the moment) but it just won't come I've tryed everybait I can think of for the barbel I've prebaited the lot. But nothing but a few slabs which we're welcome but not what I was after, I would go to bewdley or b'north I just have transport issues at moment, I have the teme 35mins walk up the road and everyone tells me togo there.. But I really want my 1st barbel from the sever
n no matter wheather it be 3lb 6lb 9lb or a double as long as I hook one and land one :)
I've also been told the stour in kidderminster is easy for my 1st barbel but never knew you could fish it till the other week ( being only my 1st full season) lol!

Tight lines oh and cheers for the replys guys :)

Re: river severn chubbing

ok well i would keep going use two rods one with halibut pellet and the other chop and change lobworm, corn, magoot, meat etc etc.the teme would be ALOT easier than the lower severn for sure, and the kiddy stour is not easy really i've had 9 since the season but i can tell you i did my homework and know a couople of haunts some people who fish there alot and have never caught one, plus you have to be silent and not make a movement when its low if you would come up here its the same distance as bewdley.
do some reading up to find how to locate barbel and their habitats location is everything with barbel imo i would find a fast shallow gravel run at the moment as the water is low if theyre are any near a feature such as an island or bushes/trees on the far bank

decent article

Re: river severn chubbing

The Teme is a harder river than the Severn IMO. You'll get more in the Severn. In the Teme they are fewer in number but better in quality and size . They also pour liquid rocket booster fuel into the river somewhere because they don' half hang on. Not that I'd know as I have blanked every time I've fished it :)
