hello is on a distinguished road
are wire traces when spinning always necessary ?

hello,

i'm going on holiday soon to scotland to go spinning for brown trout in lochs, although pike are not my target species and i think people may have to "dispatch" them if they catch them:

Do i still need a wire trace "just in case" ???

Surely a big bit of wire at the end of some light line will be a hinderence when fishing for trout(?) although i don't want to risk loosing any line in any lochs.

Thanks!

Re: are wire traces when spinning always necessary ?

In my experience you get what you pay for with traces/wire. DO NOT BUY THE CHEAP S*^T OFF EBAY UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOOSE FISH!!! I used some of these traces when I very first started fishing and did not know any better, needless to say I soon saw the error of my ways, the clips open up when you hook into a lump, they kink very easily and can snap when pulling out snags.

The best thing to do is buy some quality wire, crimps, swivels and snap links and make your own, you know what you have then, there are some usefull sticky threads in the pike fishing forum regarding trace making. The quality of the wire you use is important and will affect the lure/fly presentation, it is worth investing in a decent make. I have always been fortunate enough to have access to a supply of multi strand braided "wonder wire" from an engineering friend, this is very similar to Greys 49 strand trace wire (but half the price!!!)

Greys and Fox both make ready made lure traces but they are bloody expensive, people also sell ready made traces on ebay but you are paying a premium for someone to complete the simple task of crimping some wire and you cannot guaruntee the quality of the components.

Hope this helps

Dan

Re: are wire traces when spinning always necessary ?

hello, thanks for the reply, i don't aim to catch big 'lumps', or a pike , just want to make sure i wouldn't do the awlfull and littler any line or worse. I don't really want to buy all the components and make my own, will a generic 'Plastic Coated 7 Strand Wire trace wilth Precision Rolling Swivels' really not do ???????
