| Re: Starting out Quote:
You cant go wrong with Drennan as they are one of the best known and respected rod makers around and this rod is currently being sold for £49.99 which is amazing for Drennan. extract from Write-up: "has enough through action power play and land big hard fighting carp. At the same time the tip is responsive enough to provide good line and float control and to make playing smaller silver fish plus tench and bream a really enjoyable process" I havent yet found a Drennan rod that is not excellent. I have a couple and they are both brilliant rods. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |

| Re: Starting out Got to agree with Boldbear on this. Drennan do make some superb rods. Another thing to bare in mind is that carbon fibre technology is very very good, and the majority of tackle manufacturers use only a handful of blank types, with the expensive bits coming in the form of 'rod furniture' (rings, reel seats etc) and of course the big name printed down the side. So although a rod should always be held in the hand for a good fit and feel before buying, you can rest assured that the quality 99% of the time will be very good across the board with the 'cheaper' rods. Exceptions to this are in the likes of Greys, Hardy's and some shimano rods, as their research and development programmes are a lot more thorough, and they tend to look at slightly different manufacturing processes, and carbon compositions. Don't worry too much about a cheap ticket (my own favourite Wychwood Rogue only cost £55), plus most rods now come with a first owner lifetime gaurantee. You can always save up for that extra special rod later as you get more into the fishing. | Re: Starting out I mite of missed it but i guess you have a pole at 9m (not sure where the reel comes in unless you have a 9 foot rod), as you are a starter it think it will do the trick, get used to catching a bit more and then get a better rod/pole, if its a rod you want then at the price range you are looking at most common makes will sell a good kit, eithe daiwa, shimano, drennen, preston inovation etc etc. I wouldnt buy a pole less than £200 for a basic/starter one and then mion £500 later if its a pole you like. |

| Re: Starting out Hi peter....as your starting again , just get what you can afford, most tackle shops do a carp combo [rod and reel] for about £30 or under ,or argos / ebay both have cheap rods........i used an argos cheap rod on good friday and caught a 21lb carp and my mrs bought two of the pink [ i know !!!] rods on ebay for £6 each and has had a 13lb carp an 8lb bream and a 13lb sturgeon on them.....so you dont really have to spend a great amount to catch a decent fish........you can always spend more money later as you get more into it ...............cheers mac.............. |
