| Re: catching worms, presentation on hook, types of fish caught you on about garden worms not rag/lug worms right ? If so I normally hose the garden in the evening and chuck down a bit of washing up liquid to make them easier to pull out. Sneak up on em and pull em out fast before they bolt back down their hole(this may get you some strange looks from the neighbors). this way will get you lob worm. To get dendrobenas, brandlings, red worm ect just dig for em with a fork or leave a bit of old carpet down over a patch of soil for a few days/weeks. If your wanting to use them as a regular source of bait Id look into building a wormery/composter. __________________ Species 2011.. welcome to the forum. A good way to collect lobworms is to wait until you have a warm damp evening and then put some soft slippers on your feet and creep across your garden lawn with a small torch; if you tread lightly you should see dozens of them stretched out with their tails still in their holes all across your lawn. If there has been no rain then you can water your lawn with a hosepipe just before the light starts to fade. To catch the worms you need to tread very quietly and dont flash your torch around too fast as it is amazing how fast they can dissapear back down their holes once they detect your vibrations or get spooked by too bright a light. When you see one you need to look closely to determine which end is down the hole and then stick your finger over this end to prevent the worm from escapng back down its hole, then grab the other end and hold firm; don't pull too hard as you may break the worm, and if it breaks it is useless to keep as if you keep any broken worms with other worms they wont keep very long. After a few seconds the worm will release its hold from the hole and you will be able to lift it and drop it into your bucket. Worming is a skill that occasionally causes non-fishing neigbours great amusement as they see you crawling over your lawn with a torch on a dark damp evening, they think you have gone a bit loopy, but as any angler will tell you it is well worth it. Once you have the knack you can collect enough lobworms to last a fishing session within a few minutes. Some anglers water their lawn with water containing washing up liquid to get the worms coming up, this does work however the washing up liquid puts a taint on the worms and this I am sure makes them not as attractive to fish even if the washing up liquid is rinsed off afterwards, as some of it must get absorbed into the worms. There are some who think the opposite, and think that the fish actually like the smell of the liquid but that isn't my experience. If you fill a bucket with top-soil mixed with damp spagnum moss (sold in garden shops) and/or pieces of damp newspaper and put a few thin slices of apple on top of it you can keep your lobworms for weeks or months and just take a few each time you go fishing. However keep the bucket in a cool shaded place and ocasionally sprinkle with water to keep it damp. a couple of very small drainage holes will also help incase you overdo it with the water. Also occasionally put a few more slices of apple on top as the old stuff starts to disintegrate to provide the worms with food. Try not to mix your lobworms together with other types of worm as they often don't seem to live together that well although it is possible to keep redworms with lobworms. Also I discard any brandlings as the yellow rings contain a yellow substance that some fish seem to dislike. I prefer redworms which are usually found at the bottom of farm manure heaps, they are much smaller and a lot more lively than lobworms. hope this has been of some help good luck and tight lines Keith (BoldBear) __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |

Fill this with damp soil and shredded paper add worms then keep topping up with veg peelings, grass cuttings egg shels ect, I believe it takes a fair while for baby worms to get to full size but im using mine at the minute mainly for keeping the worms ive already collected alive __________________ Species 2011..
