| Re: perch maggots , worm , pinkies and decent presentation on your hook what rig you use is up to you a nice light float rig 2BB should be about right (its what i caught my pb 1lb 7oz perch on,not to great but oh well) would be best so when they taste your bait they wont feel the weight of the rig and spit it out. __________________ A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work................ | Re: perch It's all about finding the fish and placing your bait in the correct area of the water. Ask around and find out what parts of the river are good for sizeable roach and perch. As for bait, maggots are always up for the task, But it depends on what river you are fishing on as to what bait to use. I would suggest live bait for big perch. As for the roach, i would throw a good amount of loose maggots into your swim which will attract the small fish, when the larger fish come in for a look you should have casted a hook full of maggots awaiting their arrival. |

| Re: perch Hi - Perch like like plenty of cover so look for likely features like over hanging trees, weed, and anything which is stuck up out of the water like old stumps. Other likely spots are things like boat houses & slack water (they don't seem to like fastmoving water so much - being an ambush feeding fish). Maggots - especially red, worms, & i've found a dead or live minnow to be effective which you can catch with a kids net. Spinning can get good results - try an ABU DROPPEN which is a lure with a blade which rotates around a weighted body. The DROPPEN & all the mentioned baits will all catch perch of ANY size - The "GREAT UNCERTAINTY" is all part of the angling experience. Good Luck. | Re: perch I’ve had good Perch from dappled shade below overhanging trees, against old wooden pilings along the edge, along and close to reedbeds and the bottom of near bank shelves. Although most of mine have been caught on maggots and worms most of my biggest Perch have been caught on mouth-hooked minnow or tiny gudgeon livebaits or on very small mepps spinners retrieved slowly along the edges and along reed beds close to reeds. If you take some pollaroids you can sometimes see them moving below the surface hunting for food and I remember one time in a clear moat when I witnessed a shoal of Perch rounding up a shoal of fry into a corner before rushing in and grabbing hold of a meal; the fry were jumping everywhere, some fry even jumped onto the bank in their bid to get away. So if you see some fry jumping then a small livebait or a small spinner will stand a good chance of being taken; but keep as low as you can lest they see you and get spooked. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
