Tesco selling Carp!

I don't know if this is normal, but I certainly wouldn't think it to be!

A mate took this pic and sent it to me...

Re: Tesco selling Carp!

its regulary in the big supermarkets now, especially at christmas time as is an eastern european speciality didh, the same way as we have turkey( have you ever seen wild turkey in this country??)

and carp were originally brought here by norman monks as food ( thats why many ponds are known as stew ponds) and are def not natural fish

personally I would rather see farrmed carp on sale than see poaching, so really it helps

Re: Tesco selling Carp!

i think it comes from france mate .
I think its a great idea , we should eat more of this type of fish to give our sea,s a chance to recover
carp were originally bred for the table by the monks
We are a strange Nation as every where else i have been /lived in Europe eat coarse fish

Re: Tesco selling Carp!

i was a tesco fishmonger for a few years,we regularly sold farmed carp, unfortunately the carp anglers in my locality took it as an insult and complained,it got taken off display as a consequence,
but as nick said, its farmed just the same as trout,i dont see the harm in it,

Re: Tesco selling Carp!

I have a book called 'The Fishermans world in Pictures' which shows huge lakes on the continent where they farm Carp & Pike for the table.
There are pictures of dozens of men netting the fish using Sienne nets and pictures of dozens and dozens of large baskets full of Carp and Pike all caught for the table.
They use crop rotation and only net each lake every three or four years.

Re: Tesco selling Carp!

If Tesco started selling larger disfigured carp & giving them individual names you may see a load of bivvies appearing in the car park

Re: Tesco selling Carp!

How do people think they got here originally.

I am entirely behind sustainable fish rearing if it diversifies the fish people eat.

Personally I take one for the pot when sea fishing so don't see why any other fish should be so precious.

I personally have made several requests at the Cradley Heath store and have attempted to pursuade them to also include that ancient Greek delicacy "Deep fried cormorant feet" and "otter twizzlers". No luck yet, need to keep asking in a vaguelly eastern european accent maybe. Wild caught of course .
