ready made rig advice needed.

Hi there
Can anyone help me with a question on pole rigs?
i got a pole a month ago and have used it a few times on the local canal.
apart from embarassingly getting snagged on twigs and having to switch back to a rod a couple of times, I think Im geting a bit more used to it.
Trouble is, Ive got ready made rigs, and the float seems to sink below the surface so i keep having to change them and nver really get in to a rythmn.
Do you think the weights they put on are too heavy?
Is this a common problem?
Cheers

Re: ready made rig advice needed.

Make sure that you have plumbed up correctly and dont have too much shot lying on the bottom dragging your float under; If your float is still going under then you can remove one or two small shot or Styles untill your float is sitting correctly (you may need to adjust the remaining shot spacing after removing a shot).

Think of buying yourself a small <Pole Float Shotter> and make up your own Pole floats in front of the Television one evening, you can then be sure that they have been shotted correctly.

All you will need is:
  • A nuetral bouyancy <Pole Float Shotter> to assess the shot needed for your rig.
  • Some hooks to nylon or spade-end hooks if you tie your own hooklengths.
  • Some normal strength line and hook length line (if you intend to tie your own hookengths)
  • Some Style weights (or shot)
  • A bucket of water.
  • Some plastic float winders and small rubber bands

Tight lines

Keith

Re: ready made rig advice needed.

Thanks for the advice Keith, I think I need to do everything you said.
It might be the depth, because I was on the canal I assumed around 4 feet, but I was near to the far bank so it could have been much shallower. I could also do with sortin out my own rigs like you said. I'll look into a pole float shotter as well.

Thanks again.

Re: ready made rig advice needed.

Hi

Boldbears advice is spot on.

I personally would not use ready made rigs.

If your float is just settling below the surface add a small amount Vaseline to the float tip, it will give it a bit more buoyancy. be careful not to get it on the main line or the hook length

Cheers Darrell
I'll try the vaseline, never heard of that one, but about ready made rigs, are they all unreliable, or badly made?
I know I should be tying my own, in this weather it might be the nearest I get to any fishing.
Thanks again
Jim
