fishing for perch

Hi,
I'm sort of new to fishing, I used to fish approx 5yrs ago and recently started again. I'm interested in fishing for perch down a local river which I know has fish. Could anyone give any hints tips etc for catching them. Rigs, baits, bottom feeders, floats anything would help. As I'm kinder new the simpler anyone explains the better.
Many thanks

Re: fishing for perch

perch love lobworms , try legering one under a marginal bush or under a tree,
they are predators so a small livebait or a small spinner should catch them as well
best of luck mate

I have also heard that the big ones also have a taste for prawns on some waters especially if there are any small crays about (they may mistake the prawns as bits of crays)

I used to catch them near the the mouth of a sidestream on the canal, using a live minnow or gudgeon as bait (lightly hooked in the mouth with a size ten hook).

Re: fishing for perch

they eat maggots as well, although if you use them you'll probably only get small perch. i personally hate perch, caught one on saturday whilst bream fishing, thank god it wriggled itself off the hook

There are many fisherman who would think the complete opposite and hope the Bream would wriggle off the hook. LOL

A decent sized Perch is a very good fish; as is a very large Bream.

Re: fishing for perch

I'm the same with Pike, the last time I had a good one I lay it on it's back under a damp towel between my knees and opened its bottom Jaw then with a pair of forcepts removed the hook fine but I still managed to get the back of my hand scraped with the layers of teeth inside its mouth and my hand seemed to bleed for ever; and what made it worse was that I was showing my son how to unhook a Pike at the time.

Haha I bet you said 'so that's how not to do it son'. Sorry shouldn't laugh at your misfortune. I love perch myself, there's nothing more impressive than a big perch. However the number of times i've forgotten about the spike on the gill-plate... My concerntration is on not getting spiked by the fin. I had a really good days fishing the other day an pulled 29 perch out of the local pond, an I think everyone of them spiked me!

Re: fishing for perch

Lobworms under a tree, in the margins against staunchings, bridges etc. Feed the smaller fish off with red maggots then the bigger fish that hold back behind the main shoal will be caught. I love using those bobble Perch floats too it makes me concentrate on Perching if I have the gear so to speak.

A small Livebait is a good bet too in summer.
