 Nearly a pike ! Well what a day set off for the canal this morning topped up on a full english and coffee, decided to do a bit of stalking so travelling light was in order set up macth rod on light tackle (3lb main line ,2lb leader size 18 hook)pot of maggots and terminal tackle carried in my pocket and a small tripod type stool walked down to the third bridge which is about 2 miles from where i joined the canal. baited a few spots on the way down with the intention of stopping of at each point on the way back ,i set 20 minute time limits at each one so i would have enough time to fish them all. The first point produced nothing and the waether was starting to warm up but a nice covering of cloud was visible and the fish were topping to pick small flies of the surace which kept me hopeful , time limit up i moved back to the next swim ,on the way i noticed a large number of roach bathing just below the surface so i allowed myself a quick stop. trying to get them to feed was impossible so i kept on moving, the next swim swim was a narrow section of canal with a steep mud bank on the opposite side with a good overhang of branches (good perch territory)so in went the float and immediatly dipped under so i struck into a dead weight (snagged i thought )until it took off down the water trying to lift it to the top was near impossible so i played it a bit longer ,15 minutes later it surfaced and showed itself to be a pike of around 4.5lb . i reached for the landing net and placed it on the bank the fish had one more lunge to the bottom it was at this point i noticed a big whole in the bottom of the landing net so handing it in was my only option .As i reached down to grab it the fish gave one last shake and snapped the hook  i was absolutly shocked,gutted,slightly exited and shaking like a wreck the rest of the day only produced a few small roach but who cares when youve had a day like this __________________ give a man a fish and feed him for a day ,teach a man to fish and he will be gone for a week fishing is a discipline in the equality of men ,for all men are equal in the eyes of a fish     |
