Hooks to nylon or eyed?

Hello there!
First time on the forum and first post!

I have only recently started fishing after doing it on a holiday a few months back and loving it. Was wondering if anyone out there has any tips on the size, type and brand of hooks I should use?
I found some cheap size 20 hooks to nylon on ebay which I think I'm going to buy in the next few days and try out. Don't mention a brand which is what I'm going to guess makes them cheap!!
There are also a large range of eyed on ebay so would appreciate it if people could recommend a seller/brand for those as well!

Please tell me what you think about the hooks to nylon! - http://bit.ly/df91Ay Cheers guys.

opinions on the hooks will be appreciated and any advice about hooks in general would be brilliant.

Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

Hi, as you said you are new to fishing! I would recommend that you do use hook to nylon. However, the ones you are looking at on ebay are an unknown brand. I personally would not use them, there is no breaking strain listed with them and i find that the cheaper ones use infearior line that maybe weaker and sunlight damaged or the line is so thick that it will seriously affect the bites. I also think that the price for what you are getting is a tad expensive.

If i was to use Hook to Nylon i would use a Barbless type as this will aid you as you fish for unhooking.
Look at the following Hook to nylons that you can buy, these are good quality and trust worthy in miy mind.

Hope this helps, Regards, Steve

Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

If buying eyed hooks, then Drennan or Kamasan are the two best hooks you could hope to use

Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

I personally don't trust shop bought hooks to nylon. I often come accross old stock where the line has become weak with age or sunlight damaged. IMHO i'd always use spade end hooks up to size 10 as you get far better presentation. I tie mine using a matchman hook tyer (Available for a couple of quid in any tackle shop)

These tie a good strong knot even on the smallest of hooks. For size 10 hooks upwards I am happy to use eyed hooks & use a tucked blood knot to secure them to the hooklength. If you buy spools of line for hooklength, make sure you renew them each year, as they weaken with age & store them in a cool dark place.
Hook brand wise, anything from Kamasan or Drennan should see you in good stead. Never buy un-branded hooks off Ebay.

Wink Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

i too dont like buying hooks to nylon and would much sooner tie my own but saying that when first starting out it is much more easier to do so buy tying your own you know exactly what line you are using and the hooks are decent cant see the point of spending all that money on bait ,day tickets gear to loose the fish at the crucial point i have started using this hook tyer now really easy to use even for a woman lol

Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

When I first started out I thought I ought to tie all my own hooks, so I did.

What a disaster. I had poor knots that would pull undone with a fish on, cheap hooks that would cost me fish, the lie of the line was not giving the correct presentation, etc..

I did not know there was so much I did not know.

I soon was advised to go to hook to nylon to maintain my interest whilst still learning.

Four years later I still use them, easy and quick.

I use the drennan normally, £2-00 for 10, saves messing around, have a couple of packets of different sizes in my pocket, I use a bead and swivel on my main line so changing hooks takes a moment, useful when you have dulled the point bouncing over gravel.

Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

i always use hook to nylon not just because they are an easy way out but because i know they offer better presentation than i can deliver ,i tend to use the kamasan animal they are the best in my opinion have tried the drennen and find them a bit to long ,preston carp are very easy to break had one snap on me when i had a fish on right above the dust shot i used to sink my bait but you need to try some and find one that works best for you ,tight lines.

Re: Hooks to nylon or eyed?

Thanks a lot for all the help guys. I bought some of the hooks to nylon and received them the other day. I can't see anything wrong with them but I haven't tried them out in the water yet! Got a few more sizes and brands on the way which I ordered yesterday and have a trip planned for tomorrow.

Will tell you how it goes!
