Its hard to get right depends what bace mix ur useing. Its easyer to use cork dust and keep testing them.

I think you might get in trouble doing that Nick, unless you are using lead free solder.

The old solder was 60% lead, and in such small pieces was banned by the EA.

Lead free solder is mainly tin now, but even so I would be concerned about small bits of metal like tin being ingested.

I used to make pop ups but cooking boillies in the microwave, just take a couple out after each 10 second burst of cooking and test them in a glass of water.

should not take long to get a good buoyancy level, and no nasty metal bits.

Cool Re: semi boyant boilies

does anyone know to make a semi bouyant boilie instead of using the snowman set up which is a bottem bait and a pop up on the same rig. i'm trying to find out how much pop up mix and normal boilie mix to use, to make one bait , that does the same as an snowman

Re: semi buoyant boilies

It is impossible to give the answer
different base mixes will be different weights
It will be trial and error ,use cork or cork dust
i would never bother doing it my self , but do it as i said
If your worried about using solder , use some wire out of some some lead core ,
QUOTE ""but even so I would be concerned about small bits of metal like tin being ingested..

You actually let the fish eat your hook bait ?
Lead weights are banned , not lead

Re: semi boyant boilies

i thought metal was poisonious, so i am trying to making a bigger boilie that is semi bouyant without use any metal or lead core. i have found that some of the smaller fish nibble at the boilie and eat some of it

Re: semi boyant boilies

Like it has been said then mate your down to playing around with cork until you get it right ,
No 2 base mixes act the same so no one can answer it

You could also put a shot behind the boilie to balance it , use different weights until its right

Edit

It also depends on the hook your are using as no 2 hook makes weigh the same

Re: semi boyant boilies

why dont you just get a drill and some cork sticks? so you can critically balance each bait as needed?

i was always lead to believe the idea of critically balancing the hookbait is to make it as natural as the freebies.....

so you wouldnt want to make a batch of boilies up like that would you?

if i have missed the point here someone shoot me now! but as i say i drill out the boilie and use a cork stick on the hair pushed into the drilled out hollow of the boilie....the length of cork used depends on hook size ect..

Sorry to disagree but here is the EA byelaw and the interpretation given

these are direct quotes from the EA site

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY
SOUTHERN REGION FISHERIES BYELAWS
Update 2002/03

....

Byelaw relating to use of lead weights by anglers

No fishing weights made of lead may be used except those of 0.06 grams or less and those of more than 28.35 grams.

In angling terms this means that lead shot from size 14 to size 8 and lead weights of over 1 ounce can be used in fishing.

While lead dust shot (size 8 and smaller) are legal, they are toxic to birds if ingested. Use spillproof containers for lead dust shot and always dispose of used lead safely at home.

Interpretation
For the purpose of this Byelaw: “lead” includes any alloy or compound of lead; “lead weight” means split or shot
or any other thing suitable for weighting fishing lines which is neither incorporated and fully enclosed in the core
of the fishing line, nor incorporated in the construction of a swim-feeder, self-cocking float or a fishing lure; “
fishing lure” means any device, including a fishing fly, which is designed to attract fish and which incorporates a
fishing hook.

I think you could be on iffy ground using lead alloy solder or the inner core of lead core.

Anyway, if I want a neutrally buoyant boillie I normally use a floating bit of artificial corn, or some foam, or a pop up weighted back with some shot.
