Re: Roaching?

I don't like it lol.

Nah, gonna get a load of ground bait for Monday and feed it like mad and hope for the best. Might take my pike rod out with me as well and just let it lie on the bottom while i go for the roach.

Smile Re: Roaching?

Alot of it is simply down to the weather, for instance roach like the evening they also love warm, overcast thundery evenings from my experience. Different species like different weather & different times of the year thats the art of angling knowing when to catch certain species & when to leave it alone & go after something else instead. Tight lines.

Re: Roaching?

Well we headed out on Monday and had a brilliant day by all accounts. The weather was brilliant and so was the fishing. We landed 70 - 80 roach! I now understand why people use seat boxes because jesus i am in pain! I can hardly sit down today! Must be from getting up and down off my chair all day yesterday! lol.

It was the best days fishing I have ever had and hope to get alot more like it!

I'm currently nursing two severly sunburnt arms into the bargain! But it's worth it. Some of the fish we caught were absolutely stunning looking. We noticed some had the most awesome sheen of blue down along their back, where others had lovely darker coloured red fins.

At the start of the day my mate got plagued by wee gudgeon. Some had MASSIVE spikes and some didn't... Is that a male/female thing?

I'm glad you had such a brilliant day, well done.

Those fish you descibed with the spiney fins could have been Ruffe (see link) The Ruffe.

Gudgeon don't have spiney fins.

Looks like you had a great day, did you use a float or leger for them?

tight lines

No no they werent perch, they looked just like that gudgeon in your link mate, it wasnt spiny fins either... see the first of the 2 small fins at the bottom of that gudgeon in your link, there was 2 single spikes coming out of it, about 10mm long each, and there was one 10mm spike coming out of the top fin! There was about 5 of these caught on the day, but only 3 had these spikes!?

I used the feeder all day, mixture of liquidized bread & dynamite x feeder. I caught first on the day using bread in the feeder & sweetcorn on the hook, but after that the sweetcorn didnt really seem to be working as well as my mates maggots, so i then started using them. (Maybe if i had more patience the sweetcorn would have worked? Maybe i'd have got bigger fish?) Anyway, the later the afternoon went on, the smaller the fish and the slippier/more oily they seemed to be!?

Re: Roaching?

I should just add, these spikes that I'm talking about, only seemed to come out when tryin to unhook. So they're a defense mechanism no doubt

Re: Roaching?

Out again last night and WHAT A NIGHT!

Between me, my da and my mate, we caught 104 fish in just under 3 hours including 2 trout. It was the first time my mate had actually caught a fish and he was loving it. So fair play to him.

We didn't have scales but reckoned there was about 13 kilos in the net come the end of the night!

Hopefully getting out tonight again!
