Dissapearing foreign Crayfish - at last!!

The rumour goes that around ten years ago some fool allowed a lorry whos oxygenating equipment had broken down, which was carrying Turkish Crayfish destined for restaurants to temporarily put their cages in the local reservoir until another lorry arrived to take them away.

The eggs/spawn from these dropped through the cages and the Turkish crayfish quickly spread downstream into Our Estate lake and further down the valley.
As you know the Turkish Crays grow fairly large and have long pointed claws and can also spread overland to landlocked ponds close by so the outlook seemed grim.

However what was thought to be a permanent menace that we have had to put up with for over a decade seems to have been eradicated naturally as they seem to have fairly recently disappeared from our estate lake plus other waters including two local reservoirs in our catchment area.

This was a suspected outbreak of crayfish plague, probably brought in by a bird or on wet fishing gear.
However our joy may be short lived as the virus only affects the Turkish Crayfish and doesn’t affect Signal crayfish as much so we will still have to ensure that members dry out their nets and use our dips etc. before fishing in our lakes so that we can help prevent Signal crayfish from entering them.

I have also been told that a similar solution to the Signal Crayfish problem is not far away; so lets hope that is true.

So all may not be totally lost. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the return of our native crays once more.

Certainly would ,

when i was a kid we used to go hunting for them ,to catch and release ,used to be hundreds of them
I do fish one water which has the protected ones in Apart from that water i never see any

I also fish a couple of waters with signals in , I have even witnessed the beggers pulling my hook bait down by the hook link so they can get at the bait

Bonus side is they do taste good (signals i mean )

fantastic news for your waters

think this is wiping out the signals
