Re: witch is???

No there isn't a 'Best Bait' for fishing in Canals.

The tackle and how you present your bait to the fish without spooking them is far more important than the bait you decide to use.
Get that right then most acceptible baits will catch you fish.

Ask at the local tackle shop what fish are in your stretch of canal and which baits are better on particular stretches? Each type of fish usually has its own different preferences.

Good luck and tight lines.

Re: witch is???

Philipa, as a starter, for canal fishing, just try maggot and sweetcorn, use fairly low BS lines, say 3Lbs and trry hooks no bigger than a size 16, probably 18 is best to start with. Try floats first (full depth) and maybe later try a swimfeeder with a little groundbait added for good measure. Keep feeding some free offerings around your float to get them going but little and often, if you have 2 maggots on the hook, throw in say 5 loose maggots every 5 minutes...... dont over feed, especially when it's colder.

Re: witch is???

keep it light six pound main line three pound leader ,size 18 hook ,5 no 4 float locked in with two number 4 and the rest dotted down the line this will give you anchorage and stop your rig moving around ,maggot for bait whites are best with turmeric spice on them this will bring in good roach ,and fish just off bottom i get loads of roach fishing this way especially this time of year

Re: witch is???

Sweet corn and maggots always caught on the Oxford.Avoid the stange concoctions like a dose of acne. Also. always try down near your feet. you will be suprised at what you can catch less than a rods length out

Re: witch is???

i agree with jools bread punch is probably the most effective method on the cuts this time of year.when the weather picks up try a bit of corn to try to sort out the bigger fish.good luck.
