| Re: izaac walton- the compleat angler I've read it a couple of times over the years and enjoyed reading it. I've accumulated 3 different issues one of which also had contributions by 'charles cotton'. great book. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |

| Re: izaac walton- the compleat angler Ok, this may be seen as blasphemy by some and I can only base my knowledge on the Discovery Channel show of the same name as I've not read the book, but are any of old Izaac's thoughts acutally relevant to todays fishing? I know he had some fairly weird thoughts on baits and fish habits? Can we actually learn anything from the book, or is it merely a nostalgic look at years gone by??? __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. Reels. Check. Speckled Hen. Check. | Read information on species habitat Rich most of what he says is actually still true. Although I will submit that a book that was written in 1653 is probably a tat out of date by now yeah but great nostalgia.... __________________ So many types of fishing ... so little free time... |

| Re: izaac walton- the compleat angler Most of it is nostalga and he appears to take a lot of info from Dame Jullianas 'boke of St Albans' but it shows you that not much is really new in angling and he even describes the forerunner of the hair rig in one chapter although of course it was not called a hair rig in those days. Also it gives you a good insight of the things that they believed in those days such as how they believed that the Pike was borne of pickerell weed and the eel was born of the muck and filth of the earth. ( I cant remember the actual words but it was similar to that) Anyway a lot of the best loved books today are not boring 'how to catch them' books (most anglers know how to catch fish already) but relate to tales and humour and angling lore and such things etc. Its a great book giving lots of insight into what it was like for an angler in the 1600's and holds a wealth of interesting info relating to the time when it was written. It's especially interesting for me as it documents his exploits on the river Lea where I fish and the baits and ancient tackle that they used back in the 17th century and how the river has changed over the centuries. Isaac was not kown for this book during this time and he was mostly known for his biagraphic books about various famous people. He also smuggled a large jewel into the tower of london for the King who was incarcerated there. The book 'The Compleat Angler' was thought to be a 'coded' book by the church. Isaac is buried in winchester cathedral (not far from Southampton) and the stained glass window above his gravestone bears a picture of him with his beloved river in the background. I think 'The Compleat Angler' is well worth reading during cold winter evenings by the fire. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
