Fishing on River Wear

Im just starting to get into river fishing, just got my licence, have done mainly sea/pier fishing till now.

I live in county Durham, and heard that I can fish for free on a certain stretch of the river wear in durham city. Does anyone know where this stretch starts and finishes etc.

Also any tips, could be useful, i dont do fly fishing, so could do with some advice on rigs and bait.

Re: Fishing on River Wear

have a mix of bait corn maggots red white bread pellets mix of floats depens on what fish your after and if the river is slow fast flowing rigs not sure about rigs i dont use rigs i just attach a 5lb line with a swivle to 3-4lb line so if it break most of my wights and floats are on the 5lb line as the 4lb would snap hope fully before the 5lb would snap and lose it all

BATHS STRETCH
From the bend above the bandstand down to County Hotel - both sides
From Sunderland follow A690, at end of the Dual Carraige way take 3rd exit on roundabout(to City centre), turn left just after a bus stop (few hundred yards down the bank). Park down here, can get next to the river if you're lucky. I think it's 30p per half hour. IMO it's a bit too slow for the stick. Excellent whip fishing in winter.

FERENS PARK
From the bowling alley to Kepier Farm boundary - bowling alley side only.(I think)

From Sunderland follow A690, at end of the Dual Carraige way take 4th exit on roundabout(to Claypath). Turn right at traffic lights then turn left for Bowling alley(old ice rink stretch) or straight ahead for Ferens Park. Parking right next to river. IMO better stick fishing is to wade out and fish the stretch along side the grass field. Large barbel, chub and bream can be caught further down towards Kepier boundary but very patchy.

Ferens park is very much a barbel/chub venue with feeder/bomb being the main methods.
