can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

i have been fishing for six to eight months off the shore in blackpool,i have been out approx 20 times and have caught the grand total of 1 flounder.

before i lose faith in fishing totally, can anyone advise me if it is possible to keep any freshwater fish for eating,i have been told you cant, but that was the reason why i started fishing in the first place, and dont want to without asking people in the know first

thanks all for reading

Re: can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

mmm very emotive subject

actual licence states allowed to take 2 fish

most areas though are club waters and their rules will be almost certainly be a NO

where i am on weekend if i get 2 trout i can take, but its a grey area reallly

know carp are edible as thats why wre introduced in the first place by the monks as food, but never had and the arguments we have had on here
pike I have had ( in france) and was nice but is a b*llache to prep

so really you are looking at more of a no than the answer you wanted

keep the faith though its not just about the food

dave

Re: can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

It all depends on where your fishing. If its a trout farm/fishery then it will be on the tariff (example: 4hrs £10 - 2 fish). Generally speaking, its only really trout that are kept out of freshwater fish (even though it is possible to eat all species). If not fishing at a commercial venue then I maybe wrong but you can keep what you catch.

I don't ever usually keep the fish that I catch. I only do it if I have to ie. when its in fishery rules where you have to keep first fish for example. In which case I usually give it away to friends or family.

Bottom line: stick to sea fishing! the fish taste better and there more of 'em to eat.

Strange 1 this i dont know many people who would wont to keep a fresh water fish for the table. If you fish on a river for trout no 1 can really stop you i go fishing every weekend on a streach of the river by me its on the middle of no- were. So i could easily take as many as i like WITCH I DONT as i dont like trout i like to catch it but no eat it. Not to many people know about this good post tho.

Re: can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

i had an old cook book once, and it had recipe's for every single freshwater fish in this country.
it was written in the fourtys,i suppose there was a war on and people were desperate for food.
i should imagine most of our fish taste horrible,i certainly wouldnt eat them on principle.

Re: can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

A program my wife watches (dont no the name)that has chefs competing against each other had a chef cooking pike the other week.
As far as i know i think pike have a lot of tiny bones and an unusual taste but the chef was saying if you add certain things to it it is very nice.
Might be worth looking into recepies for pike as this is a freshwater fish that a lot of people wont complain if you kill.
Personally for eating i would stick with salmon or trout if course fish were nice i think people would be eating a lot more of it.

Re: can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

a lot of people wont compain if you kill and eat pike?
damn sure they will, i for one and every member of PAC would too, if you want a freshwater fish to eat then a nice wild brownie is the the next best thing to a salmon, all these stocked rainbows from fisheries taste real muddy, its the damn pellets that they get fed up on your tasting, enjoy lol
im a big fan off catch and release but il take the odd wild brownie and il ALWAYS take a big bsr of silver (salmon)
trust me, if you were seen clubbing a pike on the bank of a reservour you best run for your life my friend lol

Re: can i keep any freshwater fish for the table???

I see a lot of pike caught on a river near me and most of the time they are put back.I cant see the point in killing a pike because they eat other fish because that is nature and it helps keep a balance in the river.
My question is though if someone wanted to kill the odd pike to eat why is that any different to killing any other fish.
