why do you need a rod license?????????

Being from north of the border rod licenses bemuse me , once purchased does it permit you to fish anywhere? and do you still need one to fish a fishery so you pay twice. also do you need one for sea-angling. educate me with an idiots guide to a rod license. thanks peeps.

Re: why do you need a rod license?????????

a rod licence allows you to fish for course and non migratory trout on any waters in england ( with the owners permission, wether this be via membership of clkub either temporary or year or owners permission ) if a fishery yes you still need to pay their fees as well ( its how they continue their stocking and afford to run fishery as well ,

salmon and sea trout is a seperate licence

sea fishing at present has no such licence

I have to disagree with this comment!

The company I work for, works closely with the Enviroment Agency in providing Habitat Improvement along the River Frome, funded by money gathered from the rod license.

Some stretches were excavated out with machines in the 70's to provide flood relief for Dorchester, which turned them into a canal like state, void of fish and inverts.

Your money is now being ploughed back into projects to improve spawning which improves fish stocks, that leads to better fishing!

I can understand your feeling regarding this (I felt the same once), but without this money, Landowners could'nt afford the work. This leads to stagnent rivers that would support the odd Pike, and very little else.

Many other good projects are born from the money, this is just one small example!

Re: why do you need a rod license?????????

i'm happy to pay my licence fee, as i know it goes to helping maintain the rivers, lakes & banks for not only us to enjoy our hobby, but also the population at large to enjoy their surroundings (unlike car tax).
unfortunately, there are some landowners that are less than co-operative with the ea.
1 local farmowner next to the river uck in uckfield refused the ea permission to take their equipment across his fields to carry out essential maintenance work on the river, his land was the only access they had for that stretch as at either end are wiers & the rest of the bank in the other side are gardens. but then that doesn't suprise me as he illegally dammed the river & in 1998 & 2000, uckfield suffered it's worst ever flooding thanks to his dams giving way, i don't believe he was ever prosecuted though. & if he saw you walking across his land, even on public footpaths, he'd shoot at you with rock salt!
hopefully he's died now & the new landowner will let the ea have access to the river as it's in need of essential maintenance ... i know if at least 3 large trees that are in the river, collecting debris & 2 of them can be seen via google earth!
i think that explains why so few fish are being caught in that stretch of the river below them.
i've even thought in the past of getting a small boat & trying to clear some of the debris, load it into the boat & sort it out in my parents garden, then dispose of it properly.

I agree with the license and if more people got involved more people could enjoy the river. I fish an urban river , river kelvin , and thanks to the association and various groups we now have a head of salmon and sea trout running on top of a good population of brownies as well. the tributaries even get runs of fish now.
