smut meet tackle and tactics!

having a bit of a swot up on west beach, i fear a very strong tide rip, (especialy as we will be fishing the biggest tide of the month)
my initial plan was to take a carp rod or light bass rod, that is happy with 3oz and 4oz at a push! u think this will hold or do you lads think i should beef it up?
wot you boys intend on taking down ther tackle wise?

also wot sort of range we talking about, so i can get some casting practice in (cant cast for toffee lol)

Re: smut meet tackle and tactics!

I'll take any rod that is capable of casting over six ounces with ease as the tide run is unbelievable when it gets going and with any bit of weed on the line it makes it two times worse so there should be plenty of casting into the tide from me. the distances change from time to time but the best thing to do is hit it as far as you can every cast!! anything over or around the 100 yards should get you in the smuts in my view quite often. clip you bait down use a heavy lead whack it out and hope for the best!!!

PS, i think Ben is going to be doing a write up on smut fishing at some time so i wont go into to much detail.

Ollie.

Re: smut meet tackle and tactics!

my usual set up for around here is a standard beach caster with a 5oz grip lead, i think bigger weights will be needed around pagahm or where ever it is, 6-7oz maybe, and if we get stuck put an elastic band on the bottom to hold the wires
15lb main line is fine, but with big fish you need to play them well, i usualy use tappered shockleaders upto 70lb and have no problem, try and make the shockleaders long for ease of landing the fish(beach is quite steap if i remember rightly)
as for rigs, a pulley pennel righ, 70-80lb main body, and at least 40lb hook length, mine is usualy 50lb just because of the skin, especialy if you get acouple
nice big sharpe hooks are needed in my opinion, 4/0 or 5/0 is my normal, on a pulley set up, might be able to get down to 3/0 if they are strong, got to make sure they have a wide gap to acount for the crab baits, and very nice and sharpe, smuts have tough mouths
when i have more time will get some pics done, hope this helps

Talking Re: smut meet tackle and tactics!

Got the local tide tables which come with a venue guide. It says that most fish are taken at about 80m. Good job really as my casting is crap LOL

Thats cool 80m/100yrd mark isn't to bad so hopefully most of us can hit that and have a great nights fishing!! im sure there come in closer though being a big tide so i don't think anyone should worrie about the distance!! if the baits there im sure they will find it!!

I'll be using 15lb main line with 50lb shock leader straight through to the weight with 40lb hook length clipped down with a nice size short shanked crab hook on the end! probably use a 6onc breakaway led with elastic band when the tide starts to run.

PS, the less knots and crimps used to better in my opinion and check your snoods as ofter as possible cause the don't last long due to the friction from the smuts skin!!

Ollie.

Re: smut meet tackle and tactics!

My tactics: Simple pulley/pennel, 4/0 hooks thats all, with peelers and maybe rag for bait. The fish don't care what rod and reel you're using Keep it simple

Rob

Re: smut meet tackle and tactics!

I will bring a spare rod or two if anyone thinks the gear is a bit light

My tactics will be -
  • Chat and wonder
  • Have a play with other peoples tackle ( no not that ) but its a good chance to hold a rod or reel and see what they are like
  • Have a beer or two
  • Oh and must spend sometime fishing

Re: smut meet tackle and tactics!

Haven't fished for Smoothounds before but from what i've read and been told, I'll mostly be fishin for em using a harpoon attached to six oil drums and in case i hook into a big un, i'll also have small incendiary devices as well. Unless anyone thinks I'm going to light i might try a mine sweeper?
