Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics! Just thought id throw this in the mix, as no doubt thers gana be a few that havnt had a go at the mighty smutt and especialy off this stretch of coast line (forwarned is forarmed) or words to that affect! so if any of the regulars or locals wana spill the beans thats obviously great! i guess il be having a go at them with a clipped down pennel, 4ft trace going to 2/0-1/0 hooks? this works pretty well off my stretch of coast and also has done the business off brighton marina, very basic! whats the tide run like in these parts? holding bottom? bait wise matching the hatch? anyone wont to throw some ideas in? gota be useful to thos like myself that have never fished this bit of coast or ar too scared to ask! ![]() __________________ SCUPPER A COMMERCIAL TOOOO DAY!

Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics! Are we talking Hayling? If so, never seen a sizeable tope off Hayling beach, but have had a couple of pups (with TEETH!), but no reason for them not to be within reach when mackerel are running along. Distance for smuts is between 75 and 125 metres. PS Best chance of a good tope, locally, is East Bracklesham.

Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics! Here's a couple of rigs I've found successful along Eastoke groynes - ![]() ![]() The bolt rig is completely self-hooking and couple with a Varivas semi-circle hook, I have always hooked the fish in the 'lips'.

Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics! Here's a couple more standard traces to get yer 'eds around. They all work on their day. This is probably the simplest - ![]() Lots of folks like the 'Pulley Rig'; here's a version I use - ![]()

| Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics! Hi Ada, Nice diagrams. Really clear, but I have a question. What's the thinking behind the power gum in the top photo? I presume its to act as a weak lin of some sort, but I can't figure out why? I've seen the same type of rig before, but where the main trace body goes through the top ring like a pulley rig and the swivel from that clips to the cascade swivel. :icon_thin __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods.
