Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics!

Rich - the power gum gives it a bit of 'give or stretch when casting .... also holds it tight in so it does no unclip when casting ...

The beauty of this rig is once released, the cascade slides all the way to the bottom and the bait sits hard on the bottom, if there is a little flow - takes it away from the weight ...

No different to a pulley really but in a flow - will always sit on the bottom ...

The only change I make to Gremlins diagram is I put a large bead above the bait clip so as the cascade pulls mostly against the bead and not the line if there is a biggie on !

Re: Maghouses suggestion.
I often use silicon tubing above the bead and impact shield to act as a shock absorber when a fish is on.

Here's the explanation of the rig design as written for SA a couple of years ago -

ADA’S SUPER-DOOPA PLAICE RIG

Since I moved to Hayling Island (1987), I have had the time and opportunity to finely-tune rigs for various species found here…….my biggest problem was how to get a clipped-down rig to cast a long way and then present baits as close to the bottom as possible for cod and plaice, for instance.

For years I used the normal clipped-down sliding wishbone with size 2 Kamasans. I always felt, this could be improved on. Then came the Breakaway Impact Shield which gave me improved bait protection and better release! Little marvels those lads at Breakaway!
More recently came the Breakaway Cascade Swivel which I began to use a lot in my 3 hook match rigs when distance was required…….then it dawned on me not to crimp the bottom snood say, 30 cm up the three-hooker and from there it was easy………I made up a single Pennel and used a mono link, at first, to attach the cascade swivel for the cast. There was my Supa-doopa cod trace!

The only problem with the mono link at the top split ring was that hook lengths had to be spot on. Since I had been using power gum as float stops, it occurred to me that this material would give me the elasticity to be a centimetre or so out with snood lengths. After several years of experimentation, I’ve found that about 2.5 cm. of stretch in 10 lb. Power Gum is about the right compromise between being clipped down and releasing on impact.

The real beauty of this arrangement is it’s adaptability……..it works well when uptiding if maximum casting distance is required; it works with the sliding wishbone as shown and makes a good cod trace when used with a Pennel or larger hook size on a wishbone again.
I guess I can claim to have fine-tuned the design for various species, methods and venues. I hope it is useful to the rest of you out there.

The trace shown, which I have found excellent for plaice at distance comprises 70 lb Varivas Tournament blue trace body; clear Amnesia 30lb. snood length; clear Amnesia 20lb. for hook length; assorted beads and sequins and the excellent Eagle Claw E 202 size 1 tweaked hooks (as in kirbed). Why not test your trace-making ability and tie one up yourself?

This was the 'plaice rig' -

Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics!

really like the use of the cascade swivel! like i say been a bit out of the loop!
having a rig that pins a bait hard to the bottom also giving protection on the cast
is great! gana be very handy off the marina walls this summer especialy when the fish
ar just a short lob off a 40ft wall!
cheers!

Re: Smut meet 2010 tackle and tactics!

I like the rigs guys, nice to see some thinking. Is there any chance we could have these in a separate thread in the rigs section and made a sticky, they are too useful to get buried in a thread where they are hard to find.
