Thumbs up smut meet 2009 photosand bit of report( dont know result yet)

well it had been a long day at works fete, killing this beasty off ( hoped to take some too meet but was a tad too popular sorry)

then after work and a few calls and dodgy directions i had TJ in car with me withing the hour( to try and retain his title on a beach with no groins) and then went to seaton and met others all set up along the beach

has fullcreel just pharted in last pic

weather was actually very good for the evening
with a steady onshore breeze and only 2 small showers

but for me the fishing was slow, managed 1 makkie on a pop up in daytime but diddly after that
did have a suprise penguin on the line later though

thanks guys ( tj and greenheart you will never make cat burglars )

was as ever a damn good social( even the aquired taste ginger homebrew wine)

really nice to meet old friends again, and meet new, a real pleasure to meet fullcreel and jp ( who were having the best fun ever with the scad and makkie in the dark
)
left at 2 ish and after dropping TJ back and a short power nap on way back fell into bed at 4.30 with the sun comeing up

a good if not looooonnnnnngggg day

will leave ian to scores on the doors( as i dont know them)

dave

Re: smut meet 2009 photosand bit of report( dont know result yet)

Here is the amateurs report.
The little red car made it down without having a breakdown, (unlike last seafishing trip) and we called Greenhart to find out which bivvy on the beach was his.
We met some new faces for the first time and soon set up. I think I scared away most of the fish with my home made mackeral feathers, made from tinsel, which produced nothing, I chopped and changed a bit, but still nowt.
So with the few brain cells I have I made use of my time and got the kelly kettle going and got a brew going, as we like to fish with a sense of style, we also stopped and bought a decent chocolate cake to enjoy. To cap it all off I had a small digital radio with me and enjoyed the final overs from lords, the Aussies seem to be getting some decent treatment by our bowlers. Refreshed by tea and cake, I set up a bait rod, using mackeral strips from our last session at Chesil.
Sadly when we reeled in the baits had been strippe daway, crabs JP said. I had put the head of a mackie on one of my hooks, and all that came back was the skeletal structure, which was interesting, in a Tom and Jerry kind of way, as in the the cat leaves the skeletal remains.

I think we were incredibly lucky with the weather, a light breeze and only a tiny amount of drizzle. As I write this, its pi****g down outside the window, I cancelled a trip to the Brue, today. Was also a bit knackered.
No fisher had been caught when we arrived, but shorty;y after our arrival, Pingu materialised, along with TJ Norton, who I was keen to meet as he is my species hunt partner.

Pingu was the first person to catch, using a pop up sandeel. The fish a small mackerell. I saw how he had rigged the bait, and decided to have a go myself. As we were only down for a couple of hours and did not want to blank, I set up the only suitable peice of floating material I had, which after a few casts and a borrowed grip lead produced a small mackerell.

Brilliant, more points for Team B.A.W.D.
Enthused by this, we did some more feathering, not much happened until the light went, when we found a shaol of hoarse mackerell or scads as they are know,
Great fun was had with these, and I discovered that they have a small spine on their dorsal fins.
On one retrieve I thought i something a bit biggers, but I turned out I had a scad and a small pollack, which TJ id' for me, sadly we already ahd a pollack in the hunt.
More Points!!

Still it was 3 more points for us.
JP got amogst the fish too, landing some mackies, scads as well.
Here's the man in action.

As we were leaving, about an hour later than planned, it ocoured to us that we had caught more than the others so we wound up shouting the Queen song we are the champions as we sped (!!Not in my Car!!!!) through Seaton, much to the shock and bemusment of the night owls, heading off to some school uniform event.
Roll on next year.

Well as you can see from the photos, it was another excellent meet with a good turnout, sadly let down, by the absence on any Smoothounds. I arrived on the beach around midday Saturday to find it very windy, with some massive, almost un-fishable waves & frequent showers. Things did not look good for a night session. However the wind dropped, the sea calmed down & the rain dried up & by early evening conditions looked perfect. by the end of the afternoon, Ten Forum members, three guests & Geejays long suffering missus & kids had turned up. I don't know of many women who would sleep in the car with the kids, while their husband spent a whole night fishing on the beach
It did'nt take long for the beer, ginger wine & social chit chat to start flowing , then it was time to get down to some serious fishing. A good variety of baits including sandeel, peeler crab, mackerel, squid & prawn were cast out, but the local Smutt's would not be tempted. As nightfall arrived, Fullcreel & JP started to catch a few mackerel & Scad & even a stray Pollock on feathers. Then throughout the night, the only fish that showed were a couple of dogfish, a flounder & a nice brace of Bass that would eventually win Spahill this years Smutt Trophy. I pleased to say that I did'nt blank as Geejay had some fun with a string of feathers and a passing shoal of Mackerel that passed by at first light.
Thankfully the worst of the rain held off & I think Geejay & myself were the last to leave the beach at about 6am, just as the next lot of rain arrived. I was so knackered that I had to stop twice on the drive home for a snooze in a layby. Hopefully everyone enjoyed them selves & id just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all those who attended.
Roll on next years event.....

  • JP
  • Pingu
  • Baggie Rich
  • Spahill

I hope i've not forgotten anyone

Re: smut meet 2009 photosand bit of report( dont know result yet)

What have I done? It’s truley fantastic, all of my dreams have come true.

Thankyou one and all: thank you, thank you thank you.
I’d especially like to thank All those who organised the meet & bought the fantastic trophy, also those who came along to join in the celebration that it was. Whithout you none of this would have been possible.

Sniff... I’d also like to thank my mom & dad, my brother, My mates Andy & Brian who I learnt to fish with 40 years ago. I’d also like to thank Karen for keeping me awake. The guy in the kebab shop who put extra chilli sauce on... Baggie for the crabs (really) which liked the extra chilli, TJ for being such an upstanding champ for the past 12 months.... Sakuma for making the hook, Rob in the tackle shop who put the new ring on the rod. All the trafic lights that turned green when I approached. I’m really getting emotional now.

Thanks to Jack who went doo doo’s in the kitchen the night before the meet, which I stood in , this has to be the most important factor (in my kind treatment & not delivering a size 11 to the rear of the whoppet) that brough me to the attention of the lord who blessed this poor mortal whith the fortitude to carry on to achieve sucha great triumph.
May I be forever humble.
Once again thank you everyone.

Seriously.
It was good to meet everyone (newbies & old (if knowing anyone for 2 years makes you old) friends).
The fishing was hard work, although in surprising mild conditions.
Here are some pictures

First Bass 41cm (put back)

Karens 60cm Doggy

2nd bass 45cm (Sunday tea) delicious.

One very happy angler

THANKS everyone

Re: smut meet 2009 photosand bit of report( dont know result yet)

What could be finer than enjoying Speckled Hen and ginger wine with friends on the beach?

Apart of course, from enjoying Speckled Hen and ginger wine with friends on the beach, whilst actually catching some damned smooth hounds. I mean, what have we got to do??? Seeing as a lot of rods and and a lot of crabs went out last night, it would've been nice to see just one! Ah well, that's fishing and it was a cracking day/night anyway.

The fishing was really slow and the crabs were out in force (Some of them the trained, assasin variety I think we should be told!). I narrowly avoided the dreaded blank with a poxy doggie in the early hours having fished hard and come through some dodgy casting moments early on.

Well done to Paul. If we couldn't find the smutts, at least it wasn't a doggie that took the prize! Nice one mate!

A real pleasure to meet you all again. Can't wait for next year!
