Smile The Forum Smutt Trophy 2008 Details...

Welcome to the Annual Fishing Forum Smutt Trophy 2008.
This is the events third year. Let's see if we can make it an even bigger sucess than last years great meet.

Venue - Selsey Bill Sussex
Date - Saturday 21st June
Meeting place - Selsey Bill Pub at 12 noon

To find the pub, head west along Selsey high street & Hillfield Rd. The pub is on the left about 50m before the beach.

As can be seen from the following photos, it's a nice venue, with easy parking, good beaches & deep water within easy casting range. Species caught here are: Smoothounds, Bass, Bream, Mackerel, Gurnards, Small Brill, Turbot & Rays.
Bring some good grip leads as there is a strong tiderace. If you have never fished for Smoothounds before, 35lb+ hooklengths, large sharp hooks & Peeler Crab baits are the order of the day.

A great turnout at last years meet

some of last years fine fish

Sunset at Selsey

High tide is around 01.45 am Sunday morning, so bring a flask, as this will be an all night meet.

Tackle & Bait Shops: (I’ve used the information from the 2007 meet. Hopefully nothings changed)

Raycraft - High St Selsey, Tel 01243 606039 They can supply fresh Ragworm & other frozen baits, but no crab.

Southern Angling Specialists SAS 2 Stockbridge place, Stockbridge Rd Chichester. Tel 01243 531669 They normally have supplies of Ragworm, Lug & the usual frozen bait. Devon Peeler & hermit crab can be supplied to order. Ideally one weeks notice is required.

Shoreline Angling 7 Shore Rd, East Wittering. Tel 01243 673353
No further details known.

I understand from the local tackle shops & Forum members who have fished here before, that the West sands beach is the best spot for smoothounds so this will be the provisional venue. This is reached via the West Sands Caravan park so please respect caravanners rights to access, quiet & litterfree beaches. The final decision on where to fish will be taken on the day, depending on the wind direction, weather & up to date catch reports etc. Another option if West Sands beach is not fishing well is Pagham which is currently producing some good fish.
For anyone wanting to stay overnight, there appears to be plenty of B&B accommodation in the area.
If anyone on the forum has any other information on the venue, please let me know.

I look forward to seeing you all again.

A map of Selsey can be found at:

3. All fish are to be measured in Centimetres (Please bring a tape measure if you have one available. You will also require a pen & paper to record catches.

4. If it is practicable, all fish caught, will be witnessed by the competitor fishing next to you. This will depend on how crowded the venue is on the day.

6. To keep things simple Mackerel will not count. All Dogfish & Silver Eels will count as 50cm each.

7. A maximum of two rods may be fished by the competitor at any one time. A maximum of three hooks may be used on each. However you may feather for mackerel & Launce etc for bait at the same time provided it doe’s not interfere with other competitors.

8. The provisional venue is to be the West Sands beach, Selsey, West Sussex. This will depend upon the prevailing weather, wind & tide conditions on the day, as other local beaches may be more sheltered & better suited.

9. All litter to be disposed of responsibly.

10. As we will probably be fishing close to & parking in a caravan site, all noise & disturbance should be kept to a minimum.

Well done Ian. It was a superb meet last year and I can't wait to get down there again this time.

Now if you could just organise the fish...

Re: The Forum Smutt Trophy 2008 Details...

Hopefully people will get bored of fishing for them by the time of the meet as pagham has been really busy lately with some nights turning out 100 anglers plus.....and no room for anymore.....hope its not like that down selsey!! could be a nightmare.

Unfortunately if i can make it i wont be able to get down there till evening time as far as i know so i will expect you all to wait for me before slinging your leads out.....stay in the pub and have an extra pint or two.......may give me a chance later in the night when you've all fallen asleep with to much beer!! lol
