Talking smut meet 2007 report

sorry not too great a report as knackered and didnt take many pics others can add i'm sure
well after a good early start for baggie and myself (8.30 thets good for us )and a nightmare journet we managed to meet others in pub for 12.45

a good crowd being(forgive me if miss people i'm just a trouch knackered, just add your names), greenheart, banana steve, mike and twiddles, lazaruas. musser and his mate and crayfish, spahill and missus, baggie, geejay and ashley
others who arrived on the beach were maghouse, the elusive ben who left shed loads of bait and howie who fished with another forum as well

decisions were made where to fish

and we decided the end of west beach near the blocks away from the holiday makers on the beach by the nightclub
all enjoyed the climb up the hill

there as a far wind in our face and weed was sometimes a problem
musser was first in with a 31cm smut
then myself with a 33 cm (caught on a size 3 bream rig)
tide went right down and out at 6

we were treated to a cracking sunset

I then got a new pb at 5lb 12 ,(steve anmd others have pics sorry) hopes were now high for us all, but the hounds proved elusive, rob managed 2 at 5lb and 6lb heres a really bad oic of the 6(have sussed flash on phone now sorry mate)

a few schoolies and a pout were caught by others but that was it for the smoothies
left about 5.45 this morning good run back
another great social forum meet
and for once a target species, ok not 100's but its always good to put faces to names
another great day
thanks all

well done rob on winning this year
roll on 2008

dave

Re: smut meet 2007 report

Congratulations to Rob and thanks to everyone involved in making it such a good day. I may not have caught any fish but weed can put up a good fight & it's harder to get off the hook.
Looking forward to meeting up with you all again.

Re: smut meet 2007 report

I had a good day, absolutely shattered now, a long day and night in the fresh air and wind has wiped me out, I did not manage a smoothie but did get my first bass of the year, a tiny little schoolie, the weed was a pain but it did run off after an hour, seems that I was sat in the fish free end of the beach as normal.

Great meet and nice to meet some new faces and catch up with some not so new ones.

I am up for next years all we need is to invite the big hounds to that one!

Re: smut meet 2007 report

A great meet indeed - my first with the forum so really good to put names to faces !

Gotta start off by saying Pingus pies are the dogs danglies - cheers Dave !

Could not get there till tea-time due to needing some brownie FPO's for Samphire on Weds so 1700 arrival it was. Set up to the left of the others - managed to tuck in amongst the concrete so nicely sheltered. Wind was not too bad at all, F3/4 - makes a change from the usual F6/7 I fish in there so pleased it was not too bad ....

Set up - one rod out with small 6's - looking for some Bream (I know it was a Smut meet) but conditions were not too bad for Bream so worth a try whilst the sun was out ...

Second rod out - big crab bait as usual & waited ...

Very slow going to start with, as dusk came - the Smuts came, small pup (around 12") forgot to measure it !

Dave then hit with his PB of 5lb + nice grin Dave ! Well done on that mate - makes it all worthwhile ...
My next was a nice size - weighed it at 3 1/2 lbs according to my scales - had to be bigger than that I thought 85m - a check on my conversion chart put that in at just under 5lb so dodgy scales - proven by my next big Smut that weighed in at 8oz - dont think so !

Had another pup then a classic rod bender and a great spirited fight in the surf & brought in the "8oz Smut" - 97cm = 6lb10oz so pleased with that one - new scales I think (Berkerly digital scales - very susceptiable to damp I have found out) ...

HW came & so did the race & the weed - nightmare so half hour off to speak to the others - trouble with Smut hunting - it is a very anti social speices as you dare not leave your rods for fear of a high speed launch into the surf so apologies for not speaking too long to the others - Twiddles - ta for the can - sorry I miised the BBQ - next time maybe ....

That was it, nothing else, had just one stonking bite about 2 hours down with a large rag/peeler bait but a stripped hook but no fish

I called it quits & left at 3am - the West country clan were sticking it out till dawn for maybe some Bass & then 3 hours to drive home

All done and dusted - really pleased to come out on top

Shame there were not more Smuts for you guys coming all that way but that is the luck sometimes - one day loads - the next ... all gone

Well done to Ian for the organising & those making the effort to come down ...

Till next year ...
