Re: Fish of the month awards...?

Just a quickie...

Now I know carp anglers normally use up to 3 rods when fishing, sometimes 4.
The humble sea angler may use 2 at best....my point is, when deciding a fish of the month, wouldn't a sea fish be a better achievement, than say someone who was using four rods?

After all, the sea anglers' chances may be halved than say that of a carp angler....

I know it's a bit of fun, and not serious, but still, this could be took into consideration....although on reflection, just forget that comment - it's the fish that counts!........Sorry for bringing it up....

me thinks we ought to take them out in the top end of a F4 and see if they catch.

The effort carp anglers put in does them credit, with all the fancy baits proberly
costs them a fortune,
don't think I could take 24 hours plus on a boat anymore

But they do have a captive audiance

Re: Fish of the month awards...?

Interesting point but when I vote I always look at the angler and the fish caught as 2lb bass to a young one on there second trip would be a better result then 2lb bass for someone else.

Freshwater fish are in my opion much more easliy spooked

Fishing is for fun

Carp anglers only use 1 hook per rod, a sea angler may have upto 6 hooks on one rod, does that not count???

I try all types of fishing and I would say the only easy type is catching in an overstocked commercial. I have fished an 80 acre lake with water crystal clear and shallow, I think catching there is probably the most difficult, captive or tame fish get wise to baits and rigs, sea fish are not so wary.

Re: Fish of the month awards...?

A huge debate could be entered into ....but

We are all fisherman and there's so much that unites us and very little that actually threatens to divide us.

I've been known to fish in that big pond of salt water but I'm 99% freshwater although I'm not a "bivvy long session type". Don't really know what the attraction of "proper" carp fishing is but each to their own. I also get into one hell of a mess if I try and fish with more than one rod. I reckon Twiddler, Mithrandir and others have got it about right as they vary their fishing to cover just about everything. They'll learn a hell of a lot, much quicker than I will and it's suprising how many ideas can be interchanged with the methods, venues, bait etc.

Having said all that, chucking a load of scaffolding and hooks over the back of a boat is not usually my cup of tea but as far as the Fish Of The Month is concerned, the FISH and circumstances of capture are the key factors for me!

Mind you, if we're talking about the Species Hunt, then it looks as though I'll have to have a few excursions over to the "Really Dark Side".....you guys have got hundreds of species to fish for!

Where's my beer

Re: Fish of the month awards...?

freshwater fish are caught many times and become wary to a hook and line, sea fish don't usually get caught more than once,
therefore more skill is needed to tempt a freshwater fish,
BUT, with sea fish getting slaughtered by the trawlers and longliners isn't it as much of an achievement to catch a good fish out of the often barreen looking sea,

the arguments could go on all night,we are all anglers together and lets praise all the fish caught wherever they have come from

Re: Fish of the month awards...?

I used to catch carp many years ago upto 15lb at a few local lakes to me and have to say i was a complete noddy....wouldn't say i had much skill.....maybe i was just lucky in my freshwater days or the lakes were over stocked.....cant think of the last time i had a fish apart from a hound from the beach that went over 4lb though and wouldn't have to go to far back to look for a blank match card!

Personally id say catching a nice fish in the pond is easier then of the beach.

But that's just my opinion.

Re: Fish of the month awards...?

I disagree with you FF, only a few weeks ago I fished an 80 acres lake and by all means it was tough going, I fished the lake for 48 hrs and had not as much as a nibble.

Yes it is easy to catch on a well stocked lake but fishing reservoirs for example is a different matter.
You will have to use all your watercraft skills, as you are fighting against a huge amount of natural food and very wary fish which are very hard to tempt even when using natural bait like worms, maggots, snails, slugs etc as hook bait.
Even if you manage to hook one, it's hard work to land it, as they dive in to the nearest snag and you just can't stop them, don't ask me how but they seem to have a nack to shed the hook or dig themselves so deep in to the snag that you don't stand a chance to get them out and the line snaps.

But I also sea fish boat and shore, trying to reel in a 7lb cod out of 180ft deep water, with a 1lb led attached to your rig is not easy neither....I hate to see what it would be like to have a ...say 70lb eel on your hook
